Molecular confinement effects can profoundly alter the physicochemical properties of the confined species. A plethora of organic molecules were encapsulated within the cavities of supramolecular hosts, and the impact of the cavity size and polarity was widely investigated. However, the extent to which the properties of the confined guests can be affected by the symmetry of the cage─which dictates the shape of the cavity─remains to be understood. Here we show that cage symmetry has a dramatic effect on the equilibrium between two isomers of the encapsulated spiropyran guests. Working with two Pd-based coordination cages featuring similarly sized but differently shaped hydrophobic cavities, we found a highly selective stabilization of the isomer whose shape matches that of the cavity of the cage. A -symmetric cage stabilized the spiropyrans' colorless form and rendered them photochemically inert. In contrast, a -symmetric cage favored the colored isomer, while maintaining reversible photoswitching between the two states of the encapsulated spiropyrans. We also show that the switching kinetics strongly depend on the substitution pattern on the spiropyran scaffold. This finding was used to fabricate a time-sensitive information storage medium with tunable lifetimes of the encoded messages.

Metal-organic cages (MOCs), assembled by the coordination of metal nodes with organic ligands, offer excellent solvent dispersion, functionalization potential, and abundant binding sites, making them ideal for hybrid hydrogel synthesis. Herrin, a novel Zr-MOC/CS hybrid hydrogel was developed by crosslinking Zr-based metal-organic cages (Zr-MOC) and chitosan (CS) using dibenzaldehyde-functionalized polyethylene glycol (DF-PEG) as crosslinker, marking the first instance of incorporating Zr-MOC into a hydrogel matrix. The composite hydrogel leverages the catalytic activity of Zr-MOC to convert trace HO into hydroxyl radicals (·OH), delivering enhanced antibacterial performance.

Purpose: To describe a novel alternative technique for C2 fixation under the concept of atlantoaxial joint distraction and fusion with intra-articular Cages, and to report its preliminary clinical outcomes.

Methods: Eighteen patients with basilar invagination and atlantoaxial dislocation underwent atlantoaxial joint distraction and fusion with intra-articular Cages. All patients had hypoplasia of the C2 isthmus prohibiting insertion of the pedicle screw.

Germanium is known to occupy tetrahedral sites by substituting silicon in germanosilicate zeolites. In this study, we present pioneering findings regarding the synthesis of zeolites with an MFI structure (GeMFI) incorporating a high germanium amount (16% Ge). Remarkably, the germanium atoms feature a slight electron deficiency with respect to GeO, and the typical coordination number of 4, as usually reported for the germanosilicate zeolites, is exceeded, giving rise to Ge dimers in a double-bridge configuration.

Intensified host-guest electronic interplay within stable metal-organic cages (MOCs) presents great opportunities for applications in stimuli response and photocatalysis. Zr-MOCs represent a type of robust discrete hosts for such a design, but their host-guest chemistry in solution is hampered by the limited solubility. Here, by using pyridinium-derived cationic ligands with tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate (BAr) as solubilizing counteranions, we report the preparation of soluble Zr-MOCs of different shapes (1-4) that are otherwise inaccessible through a conventional method.
