Recycling valuable metals in spent LIBs is not only in line with the purpose of resource recycling but also an important measure for environmental protection. In this article, a process using biomass reduction roasting followed by a unique complexation-assisted ammonia leaching is proposed. Using waste areca powder (WAP) as a biomass reducing agent, the roasted residue is leached in an aqueous solution for the carbonate. The leaching efficiencies of Ni, Co, and Mn reach over 99% under ammonia leaching conditions of 1.5 M ammonium citrate (AC), 3 M ethylenediamine (EDA). The kinetics of ammonia leaching indicates the activation energies of Ni, Co, and Mn are 51.8 kJ mol, 47.7 kJ mol, and 40.8 kJ mol, respectively, which shows the whole duration is controlled by chemical reactions. Most importantly, this study systematically explores the mechanism of ammonia leaching and provided a useful recommendation for selecting the right ammonium salt.

The eco-friendly treatment of cyanide tailings (CT) using microorganisms is a cost-effective and promising technology. However, this process often generates the secondary pollutants, such as ammonia nitrogen (NH-N), which can adversely impacts the surrounding environment. The accumulation of NH-N is also toxic to cyanide-degrading microorganisms, presenting a significant challenge in achieving simultaneous cyanide degradation and NH₄⁺-N mitigation.

This study proposed a novel closed-wet accelerated carbonation method based on ultrasonic chemistry for treating municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI FA), assessing various reaction parameters (time, temperature, CO pressure, ultrasonic power, and alkaline additives) on the detoxification and synergistic carbon fixation. The mechanisms of carbon sequestration, heavy metal migration-stabilization, and PCDD/Fs migration-degradation were elucidated. Key findings include the reaction kinetic of MSWI FA ultrasonic carbonation aligning with the surface coverage model (R > 0.

The efficient realization of a closed-loop process is an ultimate goal for reusing spent lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), yet the complicated recycling processes of leaching and purification in an acid atmosphere are totally different compared with the regeneration method of the cathode precursor in alkali solution, inevitably resulting in the redundant consumption of acid/ammonia solutions and increased burden for a green environment. Herein, considering the advantages of selective extraction and similar chemical surroundings for recovery and regeneration, ammonia-leaching has been proposed to achieve short-process closed-loop recycling with effective impurity removal. Particularly, benefiting from the galvanic cell interaction, the sluggish reaction rate and relatively harsh reaction conditions of ammonia-leaching are well addressed.
