Background: Previous observational studies have shown that there is a controversial association between selenium levels and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Our aim was to assess the causal relationship between selenium levels and CKD using Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis.
Methods: We used the two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) method to analyze the causal role of selenium levels on CKD risk. The variants associated with selenium levels were extracted from a large genome-wide association study (GWAS) meta-analysis of circulating selenium levels ( = 5477) and toenail selenium levels ( = 4162) in the European population. Outcome data were from the largest GWAS meta-analysis of European-ancestry participants for kidney function to date. Inverse variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the main analysis and a series of sensitivity analyses were carried out to detect potential violations of MR assumptions.
Results: The MR analysis results indicate that the genetically predicted selenium levels were associated with decreased estimated glomerular filtration (eGFR) (effect = -0.0042, 95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.0053-0.0031, = 2.186 × 10) and increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) (effect = 0.0029, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.0006-0.0052, = 0.0136) with no pleiotropy detected.
Conclusions: The MR study indicated that an increased level of selenium is a causative factor for kidney function impairment.

The therapeutic effects of probiotics in patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the effects of probiotic supplementation on cell adhesion molecules, oxidative stress, and antioxidant parameters in TBI patients. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial included 46 TBI patients who were randomly assigned to receive either a probiotic supplement (n = 23) or a placebo (n = 23) for 14 days.

Fish face health hazards due to high-temperature (T) stress and the toxicity associated with nickel (Ni), both of which can occur in aquatic ecosystems. The accumulation of nickel in fish may pose risks to human health when contaminated fish are consumed. Consequently, the goal of this study was to clarify how selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs) help Pangasianodon hypophthalmus by reducing the effects of nickel and high-temperature stress.

The contamination of water resources by selenium (Se), particularly in the highly toxic Se(IV) oxidation state, poses a significant environmental and public health concern due to its detrimental impacts on humans and aquatic ecosystems. In this work, we report a novel composite foam (CFC) by incorporating chitosan (CS), cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and iron oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) nanoparticles through a one-pot fabrication process. The CFC foam features a three-dimensional porous structure, conferring both exceptional mechanical strength and superior adsorption performance for Se(IV), with a maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of 90 mg/g achieved within 3 h.

Introduction: Selenium (Se), a trace element found in soil and groundwater, is necessary for many biological functions, including cerebrovascular health, through selenoprotein formation. However, high concentrations may be harmful. American Indians face elevated cerebrovascular disease rates, which may be associated with other trace elements, such as Se.

Context: Donor-acceptor (D-A) complexes, formed between two or more molecules held together by intermolecular forces, show interesting tunable properties and found applications in diverse fields, including semiconductors, catalysis, and sensors. In this study, we investigated the D-A complexes formed between perylene and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) and their chalcogen (S, Se) and fluorine derivatives. It was observed that interaction energies due to complex formation increase while the HOMO-LUMO gaps decrease with chalcogen substitutions.
