Liposomes as drug carriers are usually injected into the systemic circulation where they are instantly exposed to plasma proteins. Liposome-protein interactions can affect both the stability of liposomes and the conformation of the associated protein leading to the altered biodistribution of the carrier. In this work, mutual effects of albumin and liposomal membrane in the course of the protein's adsorption were examined in terms of quantity of bound protein, its structure, liposome membrane permeability, and changes in physicochemical characteristics of the liposomes. Fluorescence spectroscopy methods and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), which provides information about specific groups in lipids involved in interaction with the protein, were used to monitor adsorption of albumin with liposomes based on egg phosphatidylcholine with various additives of negatively charged lipidic components, such as phosphatidylinositol, ganglioside GM, or the acidic lipopeptide. Less than a dozen of the protein molecules were tightly bound to a liposome independently of bilayer composition, yet they had a detectable impact on the bilayer. Albumin conformational changes during adsorption were partially related to bilayer microhydrophobicity. Ganglioside GM showed preferable features for evading undesirable structural changes.

In this study, we demonstrate a novel and efficient fabrication methodology for nonclose-packed, two-dimensional (2D) colloidal crystals exhibiting square lattice structures. In our recent work, we detailed the formation of 2D colloidal crystals via the electrostatic adsorption of three-dimensional (3D) charged colloidal crystals onto oppositely charged substrates. These 3D colloidal crystals possessed a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice structure with their (111) planes aligned parallel to the substrate, facilitating the formation of 2D crystals with triangular lattice arrangements upon adsorption.

Background: Early knee effusion is a common phenomenon after total knee arthroplasty (TKA), with potential clinical implications. Unlike traditional alloy knee prostheses, the polyetheretherketone (PEEK) knee system has radiographic transparency on magnetic resonance (MR) scans, which allows analysis of prosthetic knee effusion. We aimed to identify the distribution and volume of knee effusion after TKA with the PEEK prosthesis with use of MR imaging and to analyze whether dynamic changes in effusion were correlated with serum inflammatory marker changes and knee function recovery.

Carbazole-derived self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) are promising materials for hole-extraction layer (HEL) in conventional organic photovoltaics (OPVs). Here, a SAM Cbz-2Ph derived from 3,6-diphenylcarbazole is demonstrated. The large molecular dipole moment of Cbz-2Ph allows the modulation of electrode work function to facilitate hole extraction and maximize photovoltage, thus improving the OPV performance.

Objective: Social media has become an important tool in monitoring infectious disease outbreaks such as coronavirus disease 2019 and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). Influenced by the recent announcement of a possible human death from H5N2 avian influenza, we analyzed tweets collected from X (formerly Twitter) to describe the messaging regarding the HPAI outbreak, including mis- and dis-information, concerns, and health education.
Methods: We collected tweets involving keywords relating to HPAI for 5 days (June 04 to June 08, 2024).

Hematite is a promising material for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation, but its photocurrent is limited by bulk charge recombination and poor oxidation kinetics. In this study, we report a high-performance FeO photoanode achieved through gradient surface gallium doping, utilizing a GaO overlayer on FeOOH precursors via atomic layer deposition (ALD) and co-annealing for Ga diffusion. The Ga-doped layer passivates surface states and modifies the band structure, creating a built-in electric field that enhances the charge separation efficiency.
