Bringing to fruition the tantalizing properties, foreseen since the discovery of carbon nanotubes, has been hindered by the challenge to produce a desired helical symmetry type, single chirality. Despite progress in postsynthesis separation or somewhat sporadic success in selective growth, obtaining one chiral type at will remains elusive. The kinetics analysis here shows how a local yet moving reaction zone (the gas feedstock or elevated temperature) can entice the tubes to follow, so that, remotely akin to proverbial Lamarck giraffes, only the fastest survive. Reversing the reaction to dissolution would further eliminate the too fast-reactive types so that a desired chirality is singled out in production.

Synthetic single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) contain various chiralities, which can be sorted by DNA. However, finding DNA sequences for this purpose mainly relies on trial-and-error methods. Predicting the right DNA sequences to sort SWCNTs remains a substantial challenge.

Hydrogel Composition Effects on Performance as Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Purification Media.

Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry, University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, Colorado Springs, Colorado 80918, United States.

Hydrogel microsphere media allows for postsynthetic purification of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), affording characterization and application of their unique (,) chirality-dependent properties. This work reports the characterization of five hydrogel resins, Sephacryl S-100, S-200, S-300, S-400, and S-500, and the implementation of each as a SWNT purification medium. The physiochemical properties of each resin were explored spectroscopically through elemental analyses and with both light and electron microscopy.

Chirality-controlled synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is one of the ultimate goals in the field of nanotube synthesis. At present, direct synthesis achieving a purity of over 90%, which can be called single-chirality synthesis, has been achieved for only two types of chiralities: (14,4) and (12,6) CNTs. Here, we realized an ultrahigh-purity (∼95.

Article Synopsis
  • Synthesizing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with a narrow chirality distribution is critical for achieving pure chirality through sorting techniques.
  • Using carbon monoxide chemical vapor deposition with a ruthenium catalyst on silica, this method selectively produces SWCNTs with specific small diameters.
  • The resulting high-purity materials allow for efficient separation via gel chromatography, yielding much higher percentages of specific nanotube types compared to traditional methods.

Iterative Strategy for Sorting Single-Chirality Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes from Aqueous to Organic Systems.

ACS Nano

January 2024

Significant advancements in electronic devices and integrated circuits have been facilitated by semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) sorted by conjugated polymers (CPs). However, the variety of CPs with single-chirality selectivity is limited, and the sorting results are strongly dependent on the chiral distribution of the starting materials. To address this, we develop an iterative strategy to achieve single-chirality SWCNT separation from aqueous to organic systems, based on a multistep tandem extraction technique that allows a gentle and nondestructive separation of surfactants from SWCNTs, ensuring an efficient system transfer.
