Methionine is a sulfur-containing residue found in most proteins which are particularly susceptible to oxidation. Although methionine oxidation causes protein damage, it can in some cases activate protein function. Enzymatic systems reducing oxidized methionine have evolved in most bacterial species and methionine oxidation proves to be a reversible post-translational modification regulating protein activity. In this review, we inspect recent examples of methionine oxidation provoking protein loss and gain of function. We further speculate on the role of methionine oxidation as a multilayer endogenous antioxidant system and consider its potential consequences for bacterial virulence.

The imbalance of redox homeostasis, especially the abnormal levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), is a key obstacle in the bone repair process. Therefore, developing materials capable of scavenging ROS and modulating the microenvironment of bone defects is crucial for promoting bone repair. In this study, to endow poly(amino acids) (PAA) and its composites with anti-oxidative stress properties and enhanced osteogenic differentiation, we designed and prepared a calcium sulfate/calcium hydrogen phosphate/poly(amino acids) (PCDM) composite material with a thioether structure (-S-) in the molecular chain of PAA matrix through situ polymerization and physical blending method.

The ability to quench reactive oxygen species (ROS) overproduced in plant chloroplasts under light stress conditions is essential for securing plant photosynthetic performance and agricultural yield. Although genetic engineering can enhance plant stress resistance, its widespread application faces limitations due to challenges in successful transformation across plant species and public acceptance concerns. This study proposes a nontransgenic chemical approach using a designed chimeric peptide that scavenges ROS within plant chloroplasts for managing light stress.

Novel and simple spectrophotometric and distance based procedures for thiols (L-cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, and glutathione) determination in biological fluids and pharmaceuticals have been proposed based on their inhibitory action on the oxidation of catechol in the presence of Agaricus bisporus crude extract (ABE). The influence of L-glycine, L-alanine, L-proline, L-methionine, L-cystine, ascorbic acid, uric acid, and bilirubin on the thiol determination has been investigated. Uric acid, bilirubin, L-cystine (oxidized thiol), and L-amino acids do not interfere with the determination.
