Bioaerosol capture and analysis is emerging as a non-invasive diagnostic method for the detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). In this proof-of-concept study conducted in Lesotho, we evaluated the novel and simple AL2 bioaerosol detection device in comparison to conventional nasopharyngeal sampling methods. We demonstrated for the first time that SARS-CoV-2 can be detected using the AL2 bioaerosol capture device. However, studies with a larger sample size are needed to further evaluate this bioaerosol capture device for the detection of SARS-CoV-2.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) significantly affects human health, with pollutants such as organic, inorganic substances, and biological contaminants contributing to various respiratory, neurological, and immunological diseases. In this review, we highlighted the need for advanced air filtration technologies to mitigate these pollutants, which are emitted from household products, building materials, combustion processes, and bioaerosols. While traditional HVAC systems and mechanical filtration methods have been effective, they are often energy-intensive and limited in their ability to capture specific pollutants.

The production of low-cost, small footprint imaging sensor would be invaluable for airborne global monitoring of pollen, which could allow for mitigation of hay fever symptoms. We demonstrate the use of a white light LED (light emitting diode) to illuminate pollen grains and capture their scattering pattern using a Raspberry Pi camera. The scattering patterns are transformed into 20× microscope magnification equivalent images using deep learning.

Non-medical masks such as disposable non-medical, commercially produced cloth, and homemade masks are not regulated like surgical masks. Their performance, in terms of filtration efficiency and breathability, is variable and unreliable. This research provides a quantitative evaluation of various non-medical masks, assesses their fabrics' potential for the reduction of transmission of bioaerosols such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus, and compares them to surgical masks and N95 filtering facepiece respirators.
