Published: November 2022

A method to obtain tetrahydroisoquinolines (THIQs) fused to tetrahydrofuran rings from aminosugar derivatives has been developed. The procedure relies on a key deprotection of benzyl ethers followed by a double-cyclization sequence, using FeCl as the sole reagent. This tandem reaction affords the construction of novel fused polycyclic heterocycles with total stereochemical control.

Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are products of a non-enzymatic reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars. Glycated human serum albumin (HSA) increases in diabetics as a consequence of elevated blood glucose levels and glycating metabolites like methylglyoxal (MGO). The impact of different types of glycation on the immunomodulatory properties of HSA is poorly understood and is studied here.

Article Synopsis
  • Multiple analytical techniques were combined to analyze the NIST human plasma reference material SRM 1950, aiming to provide a validated list of metabolite concentration benchmarks for the metabolomics community.
  • The study utilized four platforms—high-resolution NMR spectroscopy, direct injection tandem MS, liquid chromatography tandem MS, and inductively coupled plasma MS—resulting in accurate measurements for 728 unique metabolites and an additional 330 identified through literature mining.
  • A comprehensive database (SRM1950-DB) with 1,058 metabolites, including information like structures and concentrations, is available online, representing the most thorough quantitative characterization of SRM 1950 to date.

The white poplar () is a dioecious woody plant with significant potential for the phytoremediation of soils. To realize this potential, it is necessary to utilize growth-promoting microorganisms. One potential source of such beneficial microorganisms is the rhizosphere community of wild-growing trees.

Developing a 3D bone model of osteosarcoma to investigate cancer mechanisms and evaluate treatments.

FASEB J

December 2024

Antibody and Vaccine Group, Faculty of Medicine, Centre for Cancer Immunology, School of Cancer Sciences, University of Southampton, Southampton, UK.

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary bone cancer, occurring frequently in children and young adults. Patients are treated with surgery and multi-agent chemotherapy, and despite the introduction of mifamurtide in 2011, there has been little improvement in survival for decades. 3-dimensional models offer the potential to understand the complexity of the osteosarcoma tumor microenvironment and aid in developing new treatment approaches.

Muramyl dipeptide potentiates lipoteichoic acid-induced nitric oxide production via TLR2/NOD2/PAFR signaling pathways.

Department of Oral Microbiology and Immunology, and Dental Research Institute, School of Dentistry, Seoul National University, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Lipoteichoic acid (LTA) and peptidoglycan (PGN) are considered as key virulence factors of , which is a representative sepsis-causing Gram-positive pathogen. However, cooperative effect of LTA and PGN on nitric oxide (NO) production is still unclear despite the pivotal roles of NO in initiation and progression of sepsis. We here evaluated the cooperative effects of LTA (SaLTA) and muramyl dipeptide (MDP), the minimal structure of PGN, on NO production in both a mouse macrophage-like cell line, RAW 264.
