Currently, the wish to optimize facial esthetics-in the context of a dysfunctional occlusion or not-has become the main motivation for orthognathic surgery in many cases. In this context, considering that protrusive faces are advised more attractive and that the lack of skeletal support accelerates the aging process, orthognathic surgery will mostly involve a forward movement of the maxillamandibular complex..

Sensorimotor integration and faces recognition in a model of altered face sensory information: Neurophysiological study in patients with dentofacial deformities.

Clin Neurophysiol

March 2025

Department of Biomedical Sciences, University of Sassari, Sassari, Italy; Unit of Endocrinology, Nutritional and Metabolic Disorders, AOU Sassari, Sassari, Italy. Electronic address:

Objective: To explore the excitability and sensory motor integration of the face and masticatory primary motor cortex (M1), and recognition of face expressions in individuals with dentofacial deformities (IDD).

Methods: Short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI), short-afferent inhibition (SAI) of masticatory and face M1, the blink reflex and face expressions recognition (FER) ability were assessed in 18 healthy subjects (HS) (24.56 ± 1.

Objective: This triple-blind, controlled clinical trial aimed to assess the effects of ropivacaine and lidocaine on hemodynamic factors, blood loss, opioid consumption, and postoperative pain in patients undergoing orthognathic surgery.

Methods: Thirty-two patients with Class III malocclusion scheduled for orthognathic surgery were included. The participants were randomly assigned to receive 0.

Patients with abnormal relative position of the upper and lower jaws (the main part of the facial bones) require orthognathic surgery to improve the occlusal relationship and facial appearance. However, in addition to the retraction and protrusion of the maxillomandibular advancement, these patients may also develop asymmetry. This study aims to use a semi-supervised learning method to demonstrate the maxillary and mandible retraction, protrudation and asymmetry of patients before orthognathic surgery through automatic segmentation of 3D cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and landmark detection, so as to provide help for the preoperative planning of orthognathic surgery.

Virtual surgical planning (VSP) has revolutionized orthognathic and craniomaxillofacial surgeries by enabling precise 3-dimensional analysis, detailed osteotomy planning, and custom fabrication of surgical guides and fixation hardware. However, the visualization of registration holes-critical for accurate plate fixation-remains challenging, especially in a blood-filled surgical field. This paper presents a novel technique to enhance the visibility of registration holes using Bonney's blue dye.

Incidental mishaps and learning curves during free fibula reconstruction of mandible: a case report.

J Med Case Rep

March 2025

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Manipal College of Dental Sciences Mangalore, Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka, 576104, India.

Background: Free fibula reconstruction of the mandible has been the gold standard for reconstruction of mandible owing to its rich periosteal and peroneal blood vessel supply. This demands a multidisciplinary approach of maxillofacial and plastic surgeons. Meticulous presurgical planning of harvesting fibula, resection of diseased bone, contouring the fibula to the created defect to restore the anatomy and function, microvascular anastomosis, and postoperative medical care are vital for the survival of the flap.
