Simultaneous Lefort 2 Distraction and Fronto-Orbito-Malar Advancement: Correcting Severe Upper and Midface Retrusion in a Patient With Crouzon Syndrome.

Craniofacial syndromes present with exorbitism and airway obstruction as a result of upper and middle facial hypoplasia. Classical subcranial Lefort III (LF III) or monobloc distraction osteogenesis (DO) using an external craniofacial device is used to treat these deformities. These procedures are done during mixed dentition, in most cases, advancing an abnormal face, to a more normal position.

Toward a Free-Response Paradigm of Decision-Making in Spiking Neural Networks.

Neural Comput

January 2025

Institute of Science and Technology for Brain-Inspired Intelligence, Fudan University, Shanghai, 200437, China

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) have attracted significant interest in the development of brain-inspired computing systems due to their energy efficiency and similarities to biological information processing. In contrast to continuous-valued artificial neural networks, which produce results in a single step, SNNs require multiple steps during inference to achieve a desired accuracy level, resulting in a burden in real-time response and energy efficiency. Inspired by the tradeoff between speed and accuracy in human and animal decision-making processes, which exhibit correlations among reaction times, task complexity, and decision confidence, an inquiry emerges regarding how an SNN model can benefit by implementing these attributes.

Proteoform Identification and Quantification Based on Alignment Graphs.

Bioinformatics

January 2025

Department of Computer Science, City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, China.

Motivation: Proteoforms are the different forms of a proteins generated from the genome with various sequence variations, splice isoforms, and post-translational modifications. Proteoforms regulate protein structures and functions. A single protein can have multiple proteoforms due to different modification sites.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Department of Population Health Sciences, School of Medicine and Public Health, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Madison, WI, USA.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias can have long preclinical phases; thus, midlife intervention and prevention methods could prove efficacious. Multiple health-related lifestyle factors have been associated with risk for AD. However, research on lifestyle factors has focused on clinical outcomes such as cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment and/or AD dementia; their associations with potential early changes in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers are less understood.

Background: Establishing practical and effective diagnostic pathways for people with cognitive impairment is a crucial international research priority. Traditional (late-phase) analysis of an amyloid-beta (Aβ) PET scan (∼90 minutes after radiotracer injection) provides important information about the presence/absence of underlying Alzheimer's pathology, but no information about brain metabolism/perfusion. Recent work suggests that amyloid-beta PET tracer uptake shortly after injection ('early-phase') closely reflects brain metabolism and perfusion.
