Antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains have become an ever-increasing public concern due to their significant threats to health safety. Nanomaterial-based photothermal treatment has shown potential in antibacterial applications, but many nanomaterials exhibited limited photothermal activity that may compromise their antibacterial efficacies. Herein, we report a novel strategy based on efficient photothermal ablation and physical contact over a supported nanostructure by loading Au nanoparticles (NPs) on few-layered TiCT nanosheets (NSs) for antibacterial treatment. TiCT NSs are delaminated etching and sonication, and act as a reductant for the reduction of HAuCl·HO, producing "naked" Au NPs without any stabilizers. Meanwhile, by adjusting the Au/Ti ratio, the size and loading of the Au NPs are finely regulated, thereby providing an ideal model of a surface-clean Au@TiCT heterostructure for probing the composition-performance relationship. Upon irradiation with visible light, it exhibits synergistically enhanced photothermal conversion efficiency and stability, owing to the localized surface plasmonic resonance effect of Au NP and Au-NS interactions. Moreover, under visible light irradiation for 10 min, the Au@ TiCT heterostructure exhibits excellent antibacterial activity for Gram-positive and Gram-negative , and kills over 99% bacteria with a low dose of the nanomedicine suspension (50 μg mL). The work demonstrates that the incorporation of transition metal carbides with plasmonic metal nanostructures is an effective strategy to enhance the photothermal antibacterial efficacy.

This manuscript details the application of Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) to characterize the kinetics of 3CL, the main protease from the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), and its inhibition by Ensitrelvir, a known non-covalent inhibitor. 3CL is essential for producing the proteins necessary for viral infection, which led to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ITC-based assay provided rapid and reliable measurements of 3CL activity, allowing for the direct derivation of the kinetic enzymatic constants K and k by monitoring the thermal power required to maintain a constant temperature as the substrate is consumed.

The pervasive use of petroleum-based food packaging has caused significant ecological damage due to their unsustainability and non-biodegradability. Polysaccharide-based biodegradable materials are promising alternatives, but low hydrophobicity and functional properties limit their practical applications which can be overcome by incorporation of phytochemical(s). Therefore, by leveraging the strong antioxidant and antibacterial potential of pterostilbene (PTB), we have developed PTB nanoemulsion (NE) incorporated chitosan/sodium alginate (CS/SA) film for food packaging applications.

Designing an ideal catalyst with antifouling performance and enhanced conversion efficiency can prevent microbial or dye contamination and protect the active phase of the catalysts at the triple-phase interface during disinfection processes. Herein, we developed an Lous-leaf-inspired nanometal anchored redox-active Janus nanoarchitecture with dynamic wetting abilities and synergistic catalytic/antibacterial performances. Specifically, the redox-active hydrophilic polydopamine (PDA) was used to mediate the localized self-assembly and nucleation of Ag on a cotton fabric without using other reductants.

Bacterial infections evoke considerable apprehension in orthopedics. Traditional antibiotic treatments exhibit cytotoxic effects and foster bacterial resistance, thereby presenting an ongoing and formidable obstacle in the realm of therapeutic interventions. Achieving bacterial eradication and osteogenesis are critical requirements for bone infection treatment.
