Dr. Purushottam Vishwanath Gharpure was an eminent Indian pathologist and an emeritus Professor of Pathology at the Grant Medical College, Bombay. He was a pioneer in carrying out the first field trial of polio vaccination which marked the beginning of the polio eradication program in India. Dr. Gharpure set an example by taking his laboratory work to the field and proving how the laboratory research can be used to better the society.
