Recent progress in xenotransplantation and its application to pediatric kidney disease.

Pediatr Nephrol

January 2025

Division of Nephrology and Hypertension, Department of Internal Medicine, The Jikei University School of Medicine, Tokyo, 105-8461, Japan.

Patients with kidney failure require dialysis or kidney transplantation. Kidney transplantation offers great benefits, including reduced mortality; however, many patients who wish to undergo kidney transplantation are unable to do so due to a shortage of donor organs. This shortage is a global issue, and xenotransplantation has emerged as a potential solution.

Recombinant XBB.1.5 boosters induce robust neutralization against KP.2- and KP.3-included JN.1 sublineages.

Signal Transduct Target Ther

January 2025

Laboratory of Aging Research and Cancer Drug Target, State Key Laboratory of Biotherapy and Cancer Center, National Clinical Research Center for Geriatrics, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, No. 17, Block 3, Southern Renmin Road, Chengdu, Sichuan, 610041, People's Republic of China.

The newly emerged variants of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) demonstrate resistance to present therapeutic antibodies as well as the capability to evade vaccination-elicited antibodies. JN.1 sublineages were demonstrated as one of the most immune-evasive variants, showing higher neutralization resistance compared to XBB.

The History of Studies on Oxetane Ring Formation in Paclitaxel Biosynthesis.

Chembiochem

January 2025

Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Department of Biosynthesis of Natural Products, 1# Xian Nong Tan Street, 100050, Beijing, CHINA.

There is no doubt that breakthroughs in the enzyme-mediated formation of the oxetane ring in paclitaxel biosynthesis constitute significant milestones in the biosynthesis of complex natural products. In this review, we summarize the understanding of the biosynthesis of the oxetane ring of paclitaxel from different viewpoints. Generally, it covers five aspects, (1) a different understanding of the mechanistic formation of the oxetane ring on the basis of sound chemical reasoning, (2) a reasonable speculation of the biosynthetic pathways and suitable surrogate substrates for oxetane ring formation based on the natural and chemical logical analysis, (3) Taxus genome-enabled enzymes identification, (4) the discovery of different enzymes that mediate oxetane ring formation, and (5) a mechanistic investigation involving the use of isotopic labelling experiments and quantum chemical calculations.

150 Years of the Tetrahedral Carbon: A Toast to Chirality.

Chirality

February 2025

Department of Organic and Inorganic Chemistry, Faculty of Sciences, University of Extremadura, Badajoz, Spain.

We have recently celebrated the 150th anniversary of the tetrahedral carbon (1874-2024), as postulated by van't Hoff and Le Bel, who published their seminal breakthrough only 2-months apart, on September 5 and November 5, 1874, respectively. The concept is a fundamental pillar of structural chemistry and, if we may say so, of molecular sciences. How two young men in their early careers dared to disturb the established way of thinking constitutes the jumping-off of scientific theories as constructive elements, rather than arguments derived from experiments.
