The self-organized states of liquid crystals (LCs) have recently received a lot of attention because of their various applications, especially in the fields of electron transport materials and optoelectronic devices. In most of these applications, molecules containing a donor-acceptor skeleton have been widely employed and generally these molecular frameworks have been designed mainly on the basis of the donor-acceptor concept. Inspired from this concept, we synthesized a series of new donor-acceptor based luminescent molecules, 4,6-bis(4-alkyloxyphenyl)-2-oxo-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carbonitrile (Pn-series), carrying variable alkoxy chains [ = 8, 10, 12, 14, 16]. The structures of the synthesized molecules were confirmed by various spectral analyses. Further, their absorption and emission studies indicated that these molecules show blue light emitting properties. Moreover, the experimentally obtained optical band gap was analogous to the theoretical band gap calculated from the DFT study. The first two members of the Pn-series ( = 8 and 10) are non-mesogens. As the alkyl chain length increased to = 12 and = 14, the smectic C phase appeared along with an additional low temperature ordered lamellar phase. When = 16, the smectic C phase disappeared and the compound exhibited only an ordered lamellar phase. This ordered lamellar phase is mainly due to the face to face alignment which makes these molecules potential candidates for electron transport materials and optoelectronic devices.

Currently, the development of high-performance adsorbents for the removal of nanoplastics in complex aquatic environments is challenging. In this study, a functionalized polyethyleneimine-phosphorylated microcrystalline cellulose/MoS (PEI-PMCC/MoS) hybrid aerogel was prepared and applied to remove carboxyl-modified polystyrene (PS-COOH) nanoplastics from the aqueous solution. Benefiting from the introduced functional groups and the expanded lamellar structure in MoS nanosheets as well as the highly porous 3D structure of the aerogel, PEI-PMCC/MoS demonstrated high efficiency in PS-COOH nanoplastics removal, achieving a 402.

This study investigated the dynamic changes in legume starches (common vetch, mung bean, and pea) during gelatinization. All three starches displayed a similar pattern: water absorption and swelling at lower temperatures (50-65 °C), structural rupture at medium temperatures (65-75 °C), and melting/reorganization at higher temperatures (75-90 °C). Gelatinization likely starts with internal structural dissociation, as evidenced by the weakening of the double helix structure and decreasing order observed throughout the process.

The disordered assembly and low conductivity of carbon nanotubes are the main problems that limit the application of electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding. In this work, an ordered lamellar assembly structure of multiwalled carbon nanotube/TiCT (MWCNT/TiCT) hybrid films was achieved by vacuum-assisted filtration through the hybridization of TiCT nanosheets and carbon nanotubes, where carbon nanotubes were tightly sticking on the surface of TiCT nanosheets via physical adsorption and hydrogen bonding. Compared with the pure carbon nanotubes films, the hybrid MWCNT/TiCT films achieved a significant improvement in conductivity of 452.

The demand for exploring and investigating novel starches for various applications has been high, yet starches abundant in Millettia speciosa Champ (M. speciose) plants have barely been studied. This study aims to investigate the multiscale structure and physicochemical properties, especially good hot-extrusion 3D printability of M.

The strength-ductility trade-off exists ubiquitously, especially in brittle intermetallic-containing multiple principal element alloys (MPEAs), where the intermetallic phases often induce premature failure leading to severe ductility reduction. Hierarchical heterogeneities represent a promising microstructural solution to achieve simultaneous strength-ductility enhancement. However, it remains fundamentally challenging to tailor hierarchical heterostructures using conventional methods, which often rely on costly and time-consuming processing.
