Oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) is the largest biomass waste from the palm oil industry. The OPEFB has a lignocellulose content of 34.77% cellulose, 22.55% hemicellulose, and 10.58% lignin. Therefore, this material's hemicellulose and cellulose content have a high potential for xylitol and ethanol production, respectively. This study investigated the integrated microaerobic xylitol production by and anaerobic ethanol semi simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (semi-SSF) by using the same OPEFB material. A maximum xylitol concentration of 2.86 g/L was obtained with a yield of 0.297 g/g. After 96 h of anaerobic fermentation, the maximum ethanol concentration was 6.48 g/L, corresponding to 71.38% of the theoretical ethanol yield. Significant morphological changes occurred in the OPEFB after hydrolysis and xylitol and ethanol fermentation were shown from SEM analysis.

A novel yeast species, isolated from the bark of pine trees in Gyeongju, South Korea, and designated as KCTC 37304 (ex-type KACC 410729), is characterized by its genetic, morphological and physiological properties. Molecular phylogenetic analysis involving the D1/D2 domain of the 26S LSU rRNA gene and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region confirms that it belongs to the genus . In comparison to CBS:10065, the type strain of its closest relative, KCTC 37304 exhibits 8 nucleotide substitutions (~2.

The microbial biosynthesis of the antioxidant compound resveratrol offers an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to chemical synthesis or plant extraction. Here, we showed that Kluyveromyces marxianus strains produce p-coumaric acid, a key precursor of resveratrol, with higher titres achieved under increased agitation conditions. Through further strain engineering, resveratrol production was achieved using glucose, xylose, and/or ethanol as substrates.

Enhancing the supply of the redox cofactor NADPH in metabolically engineered cells is a critical target for optimizing the synthesis of many product classes, such as fatty acids or terpenoids. In , several successful approaches have been developed in different experimental contexts. However, their systematic comparison has not been reported.
