Nanofiltration (NF) membranes with a high permeability and rejection are of great interest in desalination, separation and purification. However, how to improve the permeation and separation performance still poses a great challenge in the preparation of NF membranes. Herein, the novel composite NF membrane was prepared through the interfacial polymerization of M-phenylenediamine (MPD) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) on a double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) interlayer supported by PES substrate. The DWCNT interlayer had a great impact on the polyamide layer formation. With the increase of the DWCNT dosage, the XPS results revealed an increase in the number of carboxyl groups, which decreased the crosslinking degree of the polyamide layer. Additionally, the AFM results showed that the surface roughness and specific surface area increased gradually. The water flux of the prepared membrane increased from 25.4 L/(m·h) and 26.6 L/(m·h) to 109 L/(m·h) and 104.3 L/(m·h) with 2000 ppm NaSO and NaCl solution, respectively, under 0.5 MPa. Meanwhile, the rejection of NaSO and NaCl decreased from 99.88% and 99.38% to 96.48% and 60.47%. The proposed method provides a novel insight into the rational design of the multifunctional interlayer, which shows great potential in the preparation of high-performance membranes.

Due to the multi-factor coupling effect, the rule of interlayer friction in low-dimensional homogeneous thin-wall shell structures is still unclear. Double walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) having a typical low-dimensional homogeneous thin-wall shell structure are selected for this study. The interlayer friction of numerous chiral DWCNTs is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations to systematically analyze and understand the coupling mechanisms of various factors in interlayer friction.

Rotation of the inner tube in a double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNT) system with a fixed outer tube is investigated and found to be inducible by a relatively high uniform temperature (say, 300 K). We also found the mechanism of a gradientless temperature-driven rotating motor lies in the inner tube losing its geometric symmetry in a high-temperature field. This mechanism can be taken as a guide for designing a motor from such a bi-tube system.

Understanding the role of inter-layer interactions in multi-walled carbon nanotubes is one of the challenges in the design of potential materials because of their large impact on the physical properties of carbon nanotubes. We focused on the thermal properties of double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs), which are promising materials due to their high durability and thermal efficiency. We investigated the thermal conductance of DWCNTs by using the nonequilibrium Green's function method, and found that the quadratic temperature dependence of the thermal conductance at low temperatures consisted of three regions with different tendencies.
