A fast methodology for the determination of monohydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in human urine using a fully automated microextraction by packed sorbent coupled to a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer is reported. Sample preparation requires simple hydrolysis, centrifugation, filtration, and dilution. The method does not require a derivatization step prior to analysis with gas chromatography and allows the measurement of up to three samples per hour after hydrolysis. Quantitation is carried out by a one-point standard addition allowing the determination of 6 analytes with good limits of detection (10.1-39.6 ng L in water and 0.5-19.4 µg L in urine), accuracy (88-110%) and precision (2.1-23.4% in water and 5.1-19.0% in urine) values. This method has been successfully applied to the analysis of six urine samples (three from smoker and three from non-smoker subjects), finding significant differences between both types of samples. Results were similar to those found in the literature for similar samples, which proves the applicability of the methodology.

Air pollution significantly contributes to the global burden of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. While single source/compound studies dominate current research, long-term, multi-pollutant studies are crucial to understanding the health impacts of environmental aerosols. Our study aimed to use the first air-liquid interface (ALI) aerosol exposure system adapted for long-term in vitro exposures for ambient air in vitro exposure.

Economic development, marine transportation, and oil exploration are all activities that are increasing in the Arctic region, and there is concern regarding increased oil-related contaminants entering this sensitive environment. Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) are the main chemical constituents in oil-related contaminants and have been detected in wildlife species following both acute and chronic exposure. In 2020, an oil spill occurred in Kaikopok Bay near Postville, NL, Canada.

Indoor dust can adsorb various pollutants and long-term deposition can significantly impact air quality and human health. This study investigated the occurrence, source apportionment, and health risks associated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives (d-PAHs) in indoor dust, by focusing on residential and public buildings in Nanjing, China. The concentration of 16 PAHs and 27 d-PAHs ranged from 511 to 5472 ng/g and from 422 to 2904 ng/g, with the most abundant compounds being fluoranthene and 1,2-benz[a]anthraquinone, respectively.

The effectiveness of protected areas in mitigating human impacts remains uncertain due to limited in-situ data; however, atmospheric micropollutant deposition in alpine lakes may provide a quantitative approach to evaluate anthropogenic pressures and threats. In this study, the temporal changes of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) inside/outside the Siling Co protected area, Tibet were reconstructed. The varying anthropogenic impact history suggested that, unlike the dominance of residential activities (i.

The present review provides the first analysis and synthesis of the available scientific information on the effects of anthropogenic contaminants on cephalopod embryos, paralarvae, and juveniles. We evaluated 46 articles published between 1970 and 2023 that focused on trace elements (69%), pharmaceutical compounds (11%), persistent organic compounds (11%), and plastics (9%). To date, the greatest scientific effort has originated from Europe and Asia (France [57%], China [9%], Italy [7%], and Spain [4%]), with few reports available from the rest of the world.
