() are female fireflies that hunt and feed on the males of other firefly species that they attract by responding with glows or flashes to their bioluminescent signals. Here, we present field observations demonstrating that females are of male , a synchronous firefly exploited as a tourist attraction in the mountains of central Mexico. We show that the hunting success of the is low, as observed in previous studies, suggesting that the impact of predation on the prey population is low. We present experimental data showing sex-specific hunting behaviour, since only female fed on We also present experimental data showing that at least some female mate multiple times; we discuss the implications of this discovery for the switch between the mating and hunting modes of . We discuss open questions, as well as the possible impact of on tourism focused on synchronous fireflies.

Article Synopsis
  • A novel uncapped mRNA platform was created to enhance transfection efficiency and immune response, using lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology.
  • Five different mRNA constructs were tested, leading to measurable protein expression and robust immune responses in various animal models, particularly targeting COVID-19 and HSV2.
  • The platform, which simplifies the mRNA synthesis process, shows promise for potential applications in vaccines and therapeutic proteins, outperforming traditional constructs in immunity induction.

Article Synopsis
  • An updated revision of the firefly genus Phausis includes the identification of three new species and the designation of neotype and lectotype for previously described species.
  • A phylogenetic analysis was conducted on 13 species from this genus, using 67 morphological traits, confirming that Phausis is monophyletic and showing that adult bioluminescence has evolved as a derived trait.
  • The study also discusses the potential reclassification of the species Lamprohiza splendidula into the Phausis genus.

Department of Medical Biophysics, Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, Western University, London, ON N6A 3K7, Canada.

Background: Preclinical cell tracking is enhanced with a multimodal imaging approach. Bioluminescence imaging (BLI) is a highly sensitive optical modality that relies on engineering cells to constitutively express a luciferase gene. Magnetic particle imaging (MPI) is a newer imaging modality that directly detects superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) particles used to label cells.

Introduction: In robot-assisted sacrocolpopexy (RSC) for patients with cystocele, accurate identification of the vaginal point Aa from the serosal side is crucial for surgical mesh placement in the appropriate position. We developed a novel Pharus method for exactly locating the point Aa for RSC.

Methods: In the Pharus method, the tip of a rigid endoscope was placed directly on the vaginal point Aa.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights how underrepresentation in clinical genomics research diminishes the relevance of findings and benefits, particularly emphasizing the importance of diverse participant inclusion.
  • Researchers implemented patient-centered, data-driven strategies, such as using relatable and flexible recruitment methods, to ensure a diverse sample of parents and children in a pediatric genome sequencing study.
  • As a result, a high percentage of eligible participants agreed to enroll (93.5% acceptance) and the majority of those who enrolled completed the study, demonstrating the effectiveness of engaging with underrepresented communities.
