Background: The main objectives of this study were to determine whether known risk factors for trabeculectomy failure similarly influence gelatin stent outcomes and to identify surgical factors which may optimise success.

Methods: A retrospective, observational study was conducted at a single centre in Perth, Western Australia over 24 months. Two-hundred and sixty-two eyes of 207 patients underwent XEN-45 stent surgery with various forms of glaucoma. Surgical and postoperative data on subjects undergoing XEN-45 stent surgery was collated. Intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction success was determined using three criteria: 1; IOP <18 mm Hg, 2: IOP <15 mm Hg and 3: >25% IOP reduction from baseline. Kaplan-Meier, mixed effects Cox Proportional hazard model and Chi-Square test were used to measure survival of functioning stents.

Results: The success rates at a maximum of 2 years after surgery by criteria 1, 2 and 3 were 61.3%, 26.2% and 28.9% in primary open angle glaucoma (n = 243), 18.8%, 16.9%, 21.4% in angle closure glaucoma (n = 11), 0%, 0%, 66.7% in congenital glaucoma (n = 5) and 0% in uveitic glaucoma (n = 3). No significant reduction in success was found in those eyes that had prior ocular surgery (all p > 0.07).

Conclusions: Prior cataract or trabeculectomy surgery does not appear to adversely affect gelatin stent outcomes over 2 years follow up. Gelatin stent surgery appears to have less IOP reduction effect compared to trabeculectomy at 2 years.

The HeartMate 3 (HM3, Abbott) left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is the only commercially available option considered suitable for long-term circulatory support. External compression of the outflow graft causing obstruction (eOGO) is a serious adverse event affecting patients on long-term support. The obstruction occurs due to the accumulation of gelatinous substance between the bend relief and outflow graft.

In addition to the basic and main parts of hospital equipment, 316 L stainless steel is widely utilized in futures such as nails and screws, wires and medical bone clips, dental implants, heart springs (stents), needles, surgical scissors, etc. In the present study, the electrophoretic deposition of a composite based on chitosan (CS), gelatin, nano and microparticles of hydroxyapatite on a 316 L stainless steel substrate was investigated. Hydroxyapatite particles are added to it due to the ossification abilities of steel and due to an enhanced adhesion and bone production, CS and biocompatible gelatin polymer particles were also added to hydroxyapatite.

Article Synopsis
  • Embolic agents are used in interventional radiology for treating blood vessel issues, but few biodegradable options with good performance exist.* -
  • The study discusses a new biodegradable liquid embolic agent, in situ-forming supramolecular nanofiber (SNF) hydrogels, which are designed using advanced techniques for better efficacy and biodegradability.* -
  • SNF hydrogels show great potential for medical applications, as they can be easily injected, adhere well to blood vessels, and are compatible with body tissues, making them suitable for treating various conditions like aortic aneurysms and liver cancer.*

The implantation of covered stents has significantly contributed much to the rescue treatment of coronary artery perforation (CAP). The ability to achieve rapid hemostasis in cases of severe coronary artery perforation using covered stents alone has so far been elusive. Here, we investigate a Janus composite covered stent for rapid hemostasis in CAP.

Department of Gastroenterology, Affiliated Hangzhou First People's Hospital, School of Medicine, Westlake University, Hangzhou, China.

Article Synopsis
  • IPMN-B (intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the bile duct) is a rare bile duct disease characterized by mucus production and can lead to complications like fistula formation.
  • A patient presented with abdominal pain and jaundice, with imaging revealing significant dilation of the bile ducts and mucus buildup due to a diagnosed IPMN-B with a choledochoduodenal fistula.
  • Despite treatment that included biliary drainage and medication, the patient's condition ultimately worsened, resulting in death 10 months later, highlighting the usefulness of SpyGlass for diagnosis and the challenges of managing high-risk cases.
