Hafnium dioxide vaporizes primarily to HfO(g) in a reducing environment. The thermochemistry of HfO(g) is calculated from quantum methods and measured via Knudsen effusion mass spectrometry. For the computations, all-electron and relativistic effective core potential calculations are used. The calculation of an accurate dissociation energy and an entire potential energy curve is reported. These calculations lead to ΔH°(298) = 63.19 ± 10 kJ/mol, S°(298) = 235.52 J/mol K, and C(298-2500 K) = (2.741 × 10)T - (9.853 × 10)T + (1.295 × 10)T + 2.761 × 10 J/mol K. Experimentally, HfO(g) is generated from the reaction of Hf(s) and HfO(s) in a specially made Hf Knudsen cell. A third law treatment of the data leads to ΔH°(298) of 58.4 ± 12.3 kJ/mol, in good agreement with the calculated value.

Various photoactive molecules contain motifs built on aza-aromatic heterocycles, although a detailed understanding of the excited state photophysics and photochemistry in such systems is not fully developed. To help address this issue, the non-adiabatic dynamics operating in azanaphthalenes under hexane solvation was studied following 267 nm excitation using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. Specifically, the species quinoline, isoquinoline, quinazoline, quinoxaline, 1,6-naphthyridine, and 1,8-naphthyridine were investigated, providing a systematic variation in the relative positioning of nitrogen heteroatom centres within a bicyclic aromatic structure.

Background: The rapid and sensitive detection of nitrite is important to human health protection due to its carcinogenic and teratogenic risks with excessive intake. The Griess assay is widely applied for the design of nitrite detection system. However, its relatively slow reaction kinetics and sole colorimetry mode might limit it's the sensitivity and practical application.

Background: Viral epidemics have long endangered human health and had dramatic impacts on environment and society. The currently known viruses and the rapid emergence of previously unknown viruses lead to an urgent need for effective virus detection strategies. It is important to develop methods that can detect multiple related viruses simultaneously in order to improve detection efficiency and to avoid treatment delays due to misdiagnoses.

Lignin, a biomass-derived material containing chromophores, possesses the potential to serve as a versatile organic ultraviolet (UV) light screening agent. By employing quantum chemical computation techniques, an amphoteric deep eutectic solvent (DES) based on sulfamic acid was purposefully designed and engineered to create a solvent system tailored for the nanoparticle formation and functionalization of lignin. As confirmed by experimental evidence, the size of the modified lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) varies from 168.

Four photosensitizers PS1a-PS4a consisting in multicationic ruthenium(II) phthalocyanines (RuPcs) have been evaluated in photodynamic inactivation (PDI) of multiresistant microorganisms. The RuPcs, bearing from 4 to 12 terminal ammonium salts, have been designed to target the microorganisms cytoplasmic cell membrane and display high singlet oxygen quantum yields. In addition, PS3a and PS4a were conceived to exhibit multi-target localization by endowing them with amphiphilic character, using two different structural approaches.
