[Cytomegalovirus screening during pregnancy : an ongoing debate still in 2022].

Rev Med Suisse

Service d'obstétrique, Département de la femme, l'enfant et l'adolescent, Hôpitaux universitaires de Genève, 1211 Genève 14.

Published: October 2022

Cytomegalovirus infection remains the main congenital infectious cause of abnormal development, notably neurological or auditory. In case of early maternal infection, vertical transmission is lower than later in pregnancy, but fetal/neonatal sequelae are more frequent and severe. Until recently, there was no available treatment to prevent transmission and complications and only preventive measures were recommended. Based on a recent literature review, we will discuss the possible indication for CMV screening before conception and/or in the first trimester of pregnancy, in order to improve patient's information, prevention and treatment.

Following our previous experience with cardiac xenotransplantation of a genetically modified porcine heart into a live human, we sought to achieve improved results by selecting a healthier recipient and through more sensitive donor screening for potential zoonotic pathogens. Here we transplanted a 10-gene-edited pig heart into a 58-year-old man with progressive, debilitating inotrope-dependent heart failure due to ischemic cardiomyopathy who was not a candidate for standard advanced heart failure therapies. He was maintained on a costimulation (anti-CD40L, Tegoprubart) blockade-based immunomodulatory regimen.

Economic evaluation of newborn screening for congenital cytomegalovirus infection: A systematic review.

Eur J Pediatr

January 2025

Division of Policy Evaluation, Department of Health Policy, Research Institute, National Center for Child Health and Development, 2-10-1 Okura, Setagaya-Ku, Tokyo, 157-8535, Japan.

Purpose: This systematic review analyzes economic evaluations of newborn screening for congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection to identify key factors influencing cost-effectiveness and differences in methodological approaches.

Methods: Following a pre-registered PROSPERO protocol (CRD42023441587), we conducted a comprehensive literature search across multiple databases on July 4, 2024. The review included both full economic evaluations (cost and outcomes) and partial economic evaluations (cost only).

Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura Secondary to Cytomegalovirus (CMV) Infection: A Clinical Case.

Cureus

December 2024

General and Family Medicine, Câmara de Lobos Health Center, Serviço de Saúde da Região Autónoma da Madeira, Entidade Pública Empresarial da Região Autónoma da Madeira (SESARAM, EPERAM), Câmara de Lobos, PRT.

Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune condition characterized by a reduced platelet count due to enhanced peripheral destruction and impaired platelet production. While thrombocytopenia is a well-documented complication of various viral infections, cytomegalovirus (CMV), a member of the Herpesviridae family, is primarily associated with infections in immunocompromised patients and is rarely implicated in causing severe thrombocytopenia in immunocompetent patients. This article aims to highlight the importance of considering CMV as a significant etiological factor in ITP, particularly in cases of asymptomatic thrombocytopenia.

Purpose: To compare iridian Swept-Source Anterior Segment OCT (SS-AS-OCT) and microbiological features in Aqueous Humor (AH) in patients with Fuchs Uveitis Syndrome (FUS) and Posner-Schlossman Syndrome (PSS).

Methods: Comparative, retrospective-prospective single center study examining 131 eyes from 66 patients, including 33 eyes with PSS, 37 eyes with FUS, and 61 healthy eyes. AH samples were collected from affected eyes in all patients.

Background: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is common in the digestive and central nervous systems and can infect the entire digestive tract from the mouth to the rectum. In immunocompromised patients, CMV infection is prone to develop into CMV disease, especially in Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) patients. Severe cases may accelerate the progression of AIDS patients and form systemic CMV infection.
