The current study assessed whether insulin-producing cells obtained from dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) can be a new therapeutic approach in a rat model of diabetes mellitus (DM). Stem cells were differentiated into pancreatic β cells under hydrogen sulfide exposure via 2D and 3D methods. Each β-like cell was immunostained and transplanted into DM rats, after which the therapeutic effect was determined. Immunostaining revealed the expression of various β-cell markers in each β-like cell differentiated using the 3D method. DPSC-derived β-like cell differentiated via the 3D method promoted a sufficient therapeutic effect. The 3D method promoted islet differentiation, indicating that DPSC-derived β-like cell transplantation could be a new approach for DM treatment.

Integer Topological Defects Reveal Antisymmetric Forces in Active Nematics.

Shanghai Jiao Tong University, School of Physics and Astronomy, Institute of Natural Sciences, Shanghai 200240, China.

Cell layers are often categorized as contractile or extensile active, nematics but recent experiments on neural progenitor cells with induced +1 topological defects challenge this classification. In a bottom-up approach, we first study a relevant particle-level model and then analyze a continuum theory derived from it. We show that both model and theory account qualitatively for the main experimental result, i.

Laser Wakefield Acceleration of Ions with a Transverse Flying Focus.

Phys Rev Lett

December 2024

Stanford University, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Stanford, California 94305, USA.

The extreme electric fields created in high-intensity laser-plasma interactions could generate energetic ions far more compactly than traditional accelerators. Despite this promise, laser-plasma accelerator experiments have been limited to maximum ion energies of ∼100  MeV/nucleon. The central challenge is the low charge-to-mass ratio of ions, which has precluded one of the most successful approaches used for electrons: laser wakefield acceleration.

Sensitivity to Environmental Stress and Adversity and Lung Cancer.

JAMA Netw Open

January 2025

Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics, National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health, Rockville, Maryland.

Importance: Sensitivity to environmental stress and adversity may influence lung cancer risk, highlighting a critical link between psychosocial factors and cancer etiology.

Objective: To evaluate whether genetically estimated sensitivity to environmental stress and adversity is associated with lung cancer risk.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Data were obtained from a genome-wide association study identifying 37 independent genetic variants strongly associated with sensitivity to environmental stress and adversity and a cross-ancestry genome-wide meta-analysis from the International Lung Cancer Consortium.
