The current work aims to advance the hydrophilicity, morphology, and antifouling characteristics of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membranes for oily wastewater separation by incorporating modified bentonite. The surface of bentonite nanoparticles is altered by adopting the "grafting from" method using the surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (SI-ATRP) approach. The PVC-based membrane is first prepared by blending acrylamide grafted bentonite (AAm-g-bentonite). AAm is grafted on bentonite in the presence of 2,2'-Bipyridyl and copper (I) bromide as a catalyst. The modified bentonite nanoparticles are studied using multiple techniques, such as fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), sedimentation tests, field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), etc. Flat-sheet PVC-based membrane is prepared by blending AAm-g-bentonite using the nonsolvent induced phase separation (NIPS) technique. Different methods, including FE-SEM, FTIR, sedimentation test, contact angle, porosity, antifouling property, and filtration studies of pure and oily water, are used to characterize and determine the performance of mixed-matrix membranes. Membrane performance is improved in the presence of modified bentonite (i.e., AAm-g-bentonite), with the best result achieved at PVC/AAm-g-ben-8 (i.e., 8 wt % of AAm-g-bentonite). Enhanced pure water flux (293.14 Lmh), permeate flux (123.96 Lmh), and oil rejection >93.2% are obtained by the reduced contact angle (49.1°) and improved porosity (71.22%).

Article Synopsis
  • Arteriovenous grafts, used in hemodialysis, often face serious issues like thrombosis and infections that hinder their effectiveness.
  • Researchers created a surface-modified nanohybrid hydrogel by combining clay nanoparticles coated with zwitterionic sulfobetaine methacrylate onto a sodium alginate/polyvinyl alcohol base.
  • This new hydrogel demonstrated improved mechanical strength, biocompatibility, and antifouling properties, making it a promising option for use in blood-contacting implants.

The rapid industrial progress in today's world has led to an alarming increase in water pollution caused by various contaminants such as synthetic dyes. To address this issue, a new hydrogel sorbent, BC-r-Na-Alg-g-p(NIPAm-co-AAc), was developed by combining bentonite clay, sodium alginate, and poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide-co-acrylic acid) through one-pot free radical polymerization at 60 °C. The developed sorbent was characterized using several analytical techniques including SEM, FTIR, TGA, UTM, and swelling studies.

This study developed a nanocomposite hydrogel, CAM4-MMT, for efficiently removing basic fuchsin dye from water. The hydrogel was prepared by grafting a copolymer of acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) onto carboxymethyl konjac glucomannan (CMKGM), and doped with montmorillonite (MMT), exhibited excellent thermal stability, a porous inner structure, large specific surface area (1.407 m/g), and high swelling capacity (107.

The issue of wellbore instability poses a significant challenge in the current exploration of shale gas reservoirs. Exploring more efficient shale stabilizers has always been a common goal pursued by researchers. In this paper, a novel shale stabilizer, denoted as ANS, was prepared by employing a silane-coupling modification method to graft (3-Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) onto the surface of nano-silica.

A novel intercalated nanocomposite of mercapto-modified cellulose/bentonite (LCS-BE-SH) was synthesized by high-speed shearing method in one step at room temperature, and was applied to remove Cd from solution and remediate Cd-contaminated soil. Results revealed that cellulose long-chain molecules have intercalated into bentonite nanolayers and interlayer spacing was increased to 1.411 nm, and grafting -SH groups improved adsorption selectivity, which enabled LCS-BE-SH to have distinct capability of Cd adsorption (q = 147.
