AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to explore the effects of combining time-restricted feeding (TRF) with a low-sugar diet on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients.
  • The 12-week trial found that this combination significantly reduced body fat, weight, waist circumference, and various liver and inflammatory biomarkers compared to a control diet.
  • Overall, TRF with a low-sugar diet showed potential benefits in reducing fat and improving liver health for individuals with NAFLD.

Article Abstract

Objectives: Emerging studies have employed time-restricted feeding (TRF) and a low-sugar diet alone in the management of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but their combination has not been tested. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of TRF combined with a low-sugar diet on NAFLD parameters, cardiometabolic and inflammatory biomarkers, and body composition in patients with NAFLD.

Methods: A 12-wk randomized controlled trial was performed to compare the effects of TRF (16 h fasting/8 h feeding daily [16/8]) plus a low-sugar diet versus a control diet based on traditional meal distribution in patients with NAFLD. Changes in body composition, anthropometric indices, and liver and cardiometabolic markers were investigated.

Results: TRF 16/8 with a low-sugar diet reduced body fat (26.7 ± 5.4 to 24.2 ± 4.9 kg), body weight (83.8 ± 12.7 to 80.5 ± 12.1 kg), waist circumference (104.59 ± 10.47 to 101.91 ± 7.42 cm), and body mass index (29.1 ± 2.6 to 28 ± 2.7 kg/m), as well as circulating levels of fasting blood glucose and liver (alanine aminotransferase, 34 ± 13.9 to 21.2 ± 5.4 U/L; aspartate aminotransferase, 26.3 ± 6.2 to 20.50 ± 4 U/L; γ-glutamyl transpeptidase, 33 ± 15 to 23.2 ± 11.1 U/L; fibrosis score, 6.3 ± 1 to 5.2 ± 1.2 kPa; and controlled attenuation parameter, 322.9 ± 34.9 to 270.9 ± 36.2 dB/m), lipids (triacylglycerols, 201.5 ± 35.3 to 133.3 ± 48.7 mg/dL; total cholesterol, 190 ± 36.6 to 157.8 ± 33.6 mg/dL; and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, 104.6 ± 27.3 to 84 ± 26.3 mg/dL), and inflammatory markers (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, 3.1 ± 1.1 to 2 ± 0.9 mg/L; and cytokeratin-18, 1.35 ± 0.03 to 1.16 ± 0.03 ng/mL). These results were statistically significant (P < 0.05) compared with the control group.

Conclusions: TRF plus a low-sugar diet can reduce adiposity and improve liver, lipid, and inflammatory markers in patients with NAFLD.

The Mediterranean Diet (MedDiet) is considered an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO; it is also the world's most evidence-based eating pattern for promoting health and longevity. This study aims to investigate consumer segmentation based on consumption patterns and identify barriers to adherence to MedDiet. Data were collected in 2020 by telephonic survey based on PREDIMED, using a quota sampling technique by socio-demographic variables, such as gender, age, and regional representation of the Portuguese population.

Article Synopsis
  • - Sugar triggers the brain's dopamine system, leading to a preference for high-calorie foods and potentially contributing to "food addiction," which moves us away from healthier options over time.
  • - Historically advantageous for survival, our craving for calorie-dense foods has now led to rising obesity and diabetes rates, posing significant public health concerns globally.
  • - Recent studies indicate a notable increase in sugar consumption among youth, particularly through sugary drinks, correlating with a dramatic rise in obesity rates from 1990 to 2022.

Background & Aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is strongly related to nutrition. However, only a few human and animal studies have tested the association between MASLD and dairy consumption and the effect of milk fat on liver damage. Therefore, we aimed at testing the association between consumption of dairy product and the incidence of MASLD and fibrosis markers in humans, and the effect of milk fat other fats on MASLD in animal studies.

Unlabelled: To date, it has been established that the patient's genotype plays a significant role in the formation of trehalase enzymopathy: the level of enzyme activity decreases when the G→A allele replacement occurs in the rs2276064 locus of the TREH gene. To assess the prevalence of trehalase deficiency, extensive population-based studies are needed. Clinical observations show that the reduced activity of bowel trehalase is more common in the Arctic than in European populations.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to explore the association between symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oral health in a representative sample of the Spanish population aged 6-14 years. We also examined the contribution of several sociodemographic and behavioral determinants of children/adolescents and their family environment.

Methods: A cross-sectional study involving 3,402 subjects aged between 6 and 14 years from the Spanish National Health Survey.
