This study applied two data mining tasks: clustering and association rules to a dataset of pollutants in the state of São Paulo. The clustering task was applied to temporal patterns and geospatial distributions of pollutants, and the association rules were used to identify prevailing meteorological conditions when there were high concentrations of pollutants from 2017 to 2019. The results indicated good adequacy of the cluster, indicating different pollution levels per group, with a silhouette coefficient from 0.26 to 0.72. In the spatial evaluation, the groups severely polluted were located in the metropolitan region, on the coast and, some inland cities, by industrial, vehicular, burning, agriculture, and other emissions. The cluster identified a strong presence of O and PM in 65% and 72% of the monitored stations in several areas of the state. As for the distance between the sources of pollution, the groups of PM and NO were geographically distant, while PM, CO, SO, and O were closer, suggesting a spatial relationship of exposure. Seasonality was similar between groups, with significantly higher concentrations in winter, except for O, for which higher concentrations occurred in summer. Meteorological conditions contributed to critical episodes of pollution (support and confidence greater than 80%), with low temperature and humidity, low rainfall, and milder wind associated with increased pollutants. In conclusion, investigating spatial representativeness allows revealing spatial and temporal patterns of pollutants and unfavorable meteorological conditions to diffusion. Thus, ideal and effective measures can be taken to avoid critical periods of exposure based on the behavior of pollutants in different regions and related climate changes.

Positive associations between mean ambient temperature and involuntary admissions to psychiatric facilities.

Eur Psychiatry

January 2025

Department of Psychiatry and Neuropsychology, School for Mental Health and Neuroscience, Maastricht University Medical Center, Maastricht, The Netherlands.

Background: Temperature increases in the context of climate change affect numerous mental health outcomes. One such relevant outcome is involuntary admissions as these often relate to severe (life)threatening psychiatric conditions. Due to a shortage of studies into this topic, relationships between mean ambient temperature and involuntary admissions have remained largely elusive.

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the unique weather change and acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in the southern Zhejiang Province of China and to provide evidence for better predicting and preventing stroke.

Methods: We retrospectively collected 14,996 ischemic stroke patients data and weather data from January 2019 to December 2021 in the southern Zhejiang Province of China. The correlation and risk between meteorological factors and the number of AIS daily cases were calculated.

This study quantitatively assesses the resilience of the urban transport system in Changchun under extreme climatic conditions, focusing on the impacts of natural disasters such as snowstorms, strong winds and extreme low temperatures on the transport system. The vulnerability, exposure, and emergency recovery capacity of the transport system in Changchun were analyzed by constructing a comprehensive assessment framework combining multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDM) and geographic information system (GIS). Based on the meteorological and traffic data of Changchun City in the past 10 years, key indicators such as traffic network density, emergency resource distribution, traffic flow, and extreme weather frequency were selected in this study.

Heat waves (HW) are projected to become more frequent and intense with climate change, potentially enhancing the invasiveness of certain plant species. This study aims to compare the physiological and photosynthetic responses of the invasive and its native congener under simulated heat wave conditions (40.1 °C, derived from local historical data).
