Recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) vectors are a commonly used tool for gene delivery. There is a large choice of different serotypes whose transduction efficiency varies for different animal species. In this study, three rAAV vectors were tested for transduction efficiency in the auditory brainstem of adult barn owls () which are not standard laboratory animals. Injections with rAAV serotypes 2/1 and 2/5 resulted in reliable expression in various nuclei of the auditory brainstem of barn owls. Both vectors showed evidence of being spread by axonal transport. However, only rAAV2/5 also showed expression in regions far distant from the injection site, suggesting long-range axonal transport in connections along the auditory pathway. In contrast, injections with rAAV2/9 resulted in no expression. Our results demonstrate for the first time that commercially available rAAV vectors can be used for reliable gene expression in the barn owl auditory brainstem and pave the way toward optogenetic manipulation of neural activity in this important animal species in neuroethology and auditory physiology.

Objectives: Deletion of gene in mice has been linked to progressive hearing loss and degeneration of cochlear cells. Cisplatin, an antitumor drug, can cause various side effects, including ototoxicity. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of on cisplatin-induced hearing impairment in mice and to explore the possible mechanism.

This study reports a novel porcupine model exhibiting spontaneous deafness and pigmentation abnormalities reminiscent of human Waardenburg Syndrome Type 2 (WS2: OMIM#193510). Through phenotypic characterization, including coat color, skin, eye morphology, and auditory brainstem response (ABR) assessments, we identified hypopigmentation and complete deafness in mutant porcupines.

Aims And Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the presence, type, and severity of hearing losses in individuals with Duane Retraction Syndrome (DRS), and to ascertain if there are anomalies in the auditory pathways at the brainstem level in DRS, believed to arise from aberrant interaction between cranial nerves and brainstem nuclei.
Study Design: Cross-sectional observational study.
Setting: Tertiary referral centre.

Unlabelled: Central auditory disorders (CSD) - this is a violation of the processing of sound stimuli, including speech, above the cochlear nuclei of the brain stem, which is mainly manifested by difficulties in speech recognition, especially in noisy environments. Children with this pathology are more likely to have behavioral problems, impaired auditory, linguistic and cognitive development, and especially difficulties with learning at school.
Objective: To analyze the literature data on the epidemiology of central auditory disorders in school-age children.
