Studying the association of the brain's structure and function with neurocognitive outcomes requires a comprehensive analysis that combines different sources of information from a number of brain-imaging modalities. Recently developed regularization methods provide a novel approach using information about brain structure to improve the estimation of coefficients in the linear regression models. Our proposed method, which is a special case of the Tikhonov regularization, incorporates structural connectivity derived with Diffusion Weighted Imaging and cortical distance information in the penalty term. Corresponding to previously developed methods that inform the estimation of the regression coefficients, we incorporate additional information a Laplacian matrix based on the proximity measure on the cortical surface. Our contribution consists of constructing a principled formulation of the penalty term and testing the performance of the proposed approach extensive simulation studies and a brain-imaging application. The penalty term is constructed as a weighted combination of structural connectivity and proximity between cortical areas. Simulation studies mimic the real brain-imaging settings. We apply our approach to the study of data collected in the Human Connectome Project, where the cortical properties of the left hemisphere are found to be associated with vocabulary comprehension.

Sustainable phosphorus (P) management is essential for ensuring crop production while avoiding environmental damage and the depletion of phosphate rock reserves. Despite local demonstration scale successes, the widespread mobilization of smallholder farmers to adopt sustainable management practices remains a challenge, primarily due to the associated high costs and complicated sampling. Here, we propose a dynamic optimization of soil P status (DOP) approach aimed at managing long-term soil P status within the range of agronomic and environmental soil P thresholds, which facilitates the precise determination of optimal P application rates without the need for frequent soil testing.

Biological age estimation from DNA methylation and determination of relevant biomarkers is an active research problem which has predominantly been tackled with black-box penalized regression. Machine learning is used to select a small subset of features from hundreds of thousands of CpG probes and to increase generalizability typically lacking with ordinary least-squares regression. Here, we show that such feature selection lacks biological interpretability and relevance in the clocks of the first and next generations and clarify the logic by which these clocks systematically exclude biomarkers of aging and age-related disease.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is common, and almost half of all IPV takes place in relationships with children in the home. We inventoried laws in the 50 states and the District of Columbia in the United States of America (USA) focused on addressing IPV committed in the presence of children, as these laws could help prevent or remediate this critical health and social issue. Using WestLaw, a web-based legal research service, we identified over 1,200 statutes and 500 regulations.

The limitations of the existing quantum memory and repeater technology mean that twin-field QKD (TF-QKD) provides the most feasible near-term solution to perform QKD with an untrusted satellite.

The timing of nerve blocks for amputation surgery with immediate targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) has been disputed. Traditional practices often defer nerve blocks until post-amputation, fearing interference with motor nerve target identification for TMR. Here, we present a case series demonstrating that pre-amputation regional nerve blocks do not prevent the identification of motor nerve targets.
