We tested 187 strains of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) for the production of toxic shock syndrome toxin 1 (TSST-1). A total of 111 CNS strains were isolated from the tampons of menstruating women and 74 were isolated from unused tampons. Two strains were isolated from the genital tract of a patient with toxic shock syndrome. Strains were cultivated by the membrane-over-agar method to enhance production of TSST-1, and culture supernatants were tested by two exquisitely sensitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays. None of the 187 CNS strains produced TSST-1. We conclude that CNS colonizing the genital tracts of menstruating women and unused tampons produce TSST-1 infrequently, if ever, and are unlikely to play a role in toxic shock syndrome.

Purpose: The landiolol and organ failure in patients with septic shock (STRESS-L study) included a pre-planned sub-study to assess the effect of landiolol treatment on inflammatory and metabolomic markers.

Methods: Samples collected from 91 patients randomised to STRESS-L were profiled for immune and metabolomic markers. A panel of pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines were measured through commercially acquired multiplex Luminex assays and statistically analysed by individual and cluster-level analysis (patient).

Purpose: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a well-established risk factor for postoperative complications. Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are a common orthopedic injury and often require open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). The rise of ORIF utilization warrants investigation into factors that may expose patients to postoperative complications following DRF ORIF.

Background: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the role of the glucose-to-potassium ratio in predicting in-hospital mortality and prognosis of patients diagnosed with sepsis and septic shock in an emergency department and admitted to an emergency critical intensive care unit (ICU).

Methods: This study was a retrospective and observational evaluation of nontraumatic sepsis and septic shock patients > 18 years of age who were admitted to the emergency department of a tertiary training and research hospital and had available glucose and potassium values at the time of admission. The patients were evaluated over a 24-month period.

TSST-1 promotes colonization of within the vaginal tract by activation of CD8 T cells.

Toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) is a superantigen produced by and is the determinant of menstrual toxic shock syndrome (mTSS); however, the impact of TSST-1 on the vaginal environment beyond mTSS is not understood. Herein, we assessed how TSST-1 affects vaginal colonization by , host inflammatory responses, and changes in microbial communities within the murine vagina. We demonstrated that TSST-1 induced a CD8 T-cell-dependent inflammatory response in 24 h that correlated with persistence within the vaginal tract.

Unlabelled: The incidence of invasive group A Streptococcus (iGAS) infection has been increasing across all age groups, including pediatric patients, and is associated with high mortality rates. Although iGAS infection leads to streptococcal toxic shock syndrome and necrotizing soft tissue infections, iGAS-associated infective endocarditis (IE) is rare. Here, we report a case of iGAS-associated IE, streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, and pyomyositis that occurred after the Fontan procedure in a 7-year-old patient.
