The 'spiked helmet sign' (SHS) is an electrocardiographic finding associated with critical illness and a high risk of death; It is likened to ST-elevation, leading to harmful coronary imaging despite lack of apparent myocardial infarction. We describe the case of SHS secondary to high ventilation pressures in the setting of Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) in a critically ill patient who subsequently developed barotrauma.

Chlorinated coumarins, which are as cytotoxic as highly toxic halobenzoquinones toward CHO-K1 cells, have recently been identified as disinfection byproducts in drinking water disinfection processes. Therefore, detecting coumarins in water samples collected at various stages from drinking water treatment plants helps assess the formation of chlorinated coumarins in drinking water. Hence, a simple, rapid, accurate, and sensitive method for quantifying coumarins in water samples is required.

The release of PAEs into the environment through pathways that include leaching, evaporation, abrasion, and the use of personal care products exposes humans to PAEs via ingestion, inhalation, and dermal absorption. Pregnant women, as a particularly vulnerable population, risk adverse newborn growth and development when exposed to PAEs.

Epidemic infections and spreading antibiotic resistance require diagnostic tests that can be rapidly adopted. To reduce the usually time-consuming adaptation of molecular diagnostic tests to changing targets, we propose the novel approach of a repurposable sensing electrode functionalization with a universal, target-independent oligonucleotide probe. In the liquid phase covering the electrode, the target sequence is amplified by MD LAMP (mediator-displacement loop-mediated isothermal amplification) releasing a generic methylene blue-labeled mediator, which specifically hybridizes to the solid-phase probe.

A Sprague-Dawley rat model was utilized to elucidate perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS) toxicokinetics with a goal of developing an in vivo approach for quantifying PFAS relative bioavailability in impacted soil. Following single dose administration (gavage) of ∼ 0.2-2000 µg kg BW of PFOA, PFOS or PFHxS, differences in PFAS blood, organ and excreta concentrations were observed over 120 h although linear dose responses were determined for area under the blood plasma time curves (AUC; PFOA, PFHxS), liver accumulation (LA: PFOS) and urinary excretion (UE; PFOA, PFHxS).

Mercury has caused severe harm to the environment and human health. A novel biological screen method was developed and identified a Hg chelator BDTH2. Both biological and chemical methods demonstrated BDTH2 displayed a high specificity and strong binding capacity for Hg.
