Clinical characteristics associated with cervical hydrated nucleus pulposus extrusion in dogs.

J Vet Intern Med

January 2025

Department of Clinical Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA.

Background: Clinical characteristics of cervical hydrated nucleus pulposus extrusion (HNPE) in dogs compared to other causes of cervical myelopathy are not well described.

Hypothesis/objectives: To evaluate for clinical characteristics and mechanical ventilation likelihood associated with HNPE compared to other causes of cervical myelopathy.

Animals: Three hundred seventy-seven client-owned dogs from 2010 to 2022.

Self-Sustained Biophotocatalytic Nano-Organelle Reactors with Programmable DNA Switches for Combating Tumor Metastasis.

Adv Mater

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Marine Drugs, Chinese Ministry of Education, School of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ocean University of China, Qingdao, 266003, P. R. China.

Metastasis, the leading cause of mortality in cancer patients, presents challenges for conventional photodynamic therapy (PDT) due to its reliance on localized light and oxygen application to tumors. To overcome these limitations, a self-sustained organelle-mimicking nanoreactor is developed here with programmable DNA switches that enables bio-chem-photocatalytic cascade-driven starvation-photodynamic synergistic therapy against tumor metastasis. Emulating the compartmentalization and positional assembly strategies found in living cells, this nano-organelle reactor allows quantitative co-compartmentalization of multiple functional modules for the designed self-illuminating chemiexcited PDT system.

Validation and the role of PDK4 relevant to ferroptosis in degenerative lumbar disc disease.

J Orthop Surg Res

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedics, Qilu Hospital of Shandong University, No.107, Wenhuaxi Road, Lixia District, Jinan, Shandong Province, 250012, China.

Background: Ferroptosis was involved in the pathogenesis of intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). However, the exact mechanism of IVDD associated with ferroptosis still required deeper studies.

Method: The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in rat lumbar disc tissue between the control and IVDD group treated with IL-1β were detected by RNA sequencing (RNA-seq).

Pleomorphic adenoma of the lacrimal gland (PALG) is a benign neoplasm typically presenting with gradual, painless globe displacement and/or lid swelling. We report an atypical case of PALG in a 53-year old male presenting acutely, mimicking orbital cellulitis. Imaging demonstrated an extraconal rim-enhancing soft-tissue lesion medial to the left lacrimal gland, involving superior rectus and levator palpebrae superioris.

Background: Although the number of studies reporting war-induced effects on the health of the Ukrainian population has been growing, there are still little data on assessing patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) during the war. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of war on T2D patients' health to define key risk factors promoting disease progression.

Methods: A survey covering various aspects of T2D patients' experience and glycemic control data was conducted from June 2022 to February 2024.
