Background: A diagnosis of "idiopathic short stature" (ISS) in a child means that the cause of the disease has not been established, although there are certainly some unknown factors that contributed to its occurrence. Ghrelin and leptin are important in controlling food intake; ghrelin is also a growth hormone (GH) stimulator. Both enterohormones are produced in the stomach and their secretion may be affected by a () infection.

Methods: Our study included a group of 61 children (53 prepubertal and 8 peripubertal) with ISS, without any gastrointestinal tract symptoms but in whom the histopathological evaluation of stomach tissue was made during gastroscopy to diagnose infection. In each child, fasting ghrelin, leptin and IGF-1 concentrations, and GH levels in two stimulation tests were assessed.

Results: infection was confirmed in 24.6% of the children. Ghrelin and IGF-1 concentrations were significantly lower in -positive than -negative children (this was more noticeable in prepubertal subgroups), however there was not a discrepancy in regards to GH concentrations in stimulation tests, leptin levels or the nutritional state between groups.

Conclusions: Short children, infected by seem to have lower ghrelin and IGF-1 concentrations than children without infection, this may be the reason for a worse growth rate in this subgroup.

Scabiosa artropurperea, a member of the Dipsacaceae family and Scabiosa genus, is renowned for its medicinal properties. In the present study, we investigated the impact of Scabiosa artropurperea aqueous extract (AES) on the in vivo reproductive functions in Queue Fine de l'Ouest ewes, and on in vitro ovine granulosa cells. Ewes were synchronized for 14 days with intra-vagina progesterone (P4) devices (FGA, 20 mg) and divided into four groups receiving daily oral doses of 0, 1, 2, and 4 mg of AES/kg Live Body Weight (LBW), respectively.

The transition period is a crucial stage in the reproductive cycle for dams and is linked closely with postpartum recovery, reproduction performance, and health. The confronting problem in the yak industry is that transition yaks under a conventional grazing feeding regime endure nutritional deficiency since this period is in late winter and early spring of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with the lack of grass on natural pasture. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of perinatal nutritional supplementation and early weaning on serum biochemistry, reproductive performance, and metabolomics in transition yaks.

Sclerostin and OPG/RANK-L system take part in bone remodeling in patients with acromegaly.

Front Endocrinol (Lausanne)

January 2025

Department and Clinic of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Isotope Therapy, Wroclaw Medical University, Wrocław, Poland.

Article Synopsis
  • Acromegaly is marked by increased bone turnover and higher vertebral fracture risk, with sclerostin inhibiting bone formation and playing a role in the OPG/RANK-L system that regulates bone metabolism.
  • The study investigated levels of sclerostin, osteoprotegerin (OPG), and RANK-L in 126 patients with varying acromegaly activity, aiming to explore connections between sclerostin and bone health.
  • Results showed lower sclerostin levels in acromegaly patients compared to controls, with notable differences in OPG levels across groups but no significant changes in RANK-L; a positive correlation was found between sclerostin and OPG in patients with various acromegaly

Shortening of the telomere length during the transition period of dairy cows in relation to biological stress.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Reproduction and Population Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University, Salisburylaan 133, 9820, Merelbeke, Belgium.

Article Synopsis
  • Telomere length (TL) shortens during the transition period in dairy cattle, as confirmed by a study examining Holstein cows before and after calving.
  • Higher oxidative stress markers and certain blood proteins are associated with this shortening, indicating possible links to stress during this time.
  • The research highlights the importance of understanding how factors like oxidative stress and inflammation affect TL, though it emphasizes that causality still needs to be explored further.

Introduction: Heavy metal pollution threatens the biodiversity and ecological equilibrium of the Nile River. This study investigates the impact of heavy metal pollution on aquatic animals such as Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in the Damietta branch of the River Nile and El-Rayah El-Tawfeeky canal in Benha City in Egypt.

Methods: Fish and water samples were collected from the Damietta branch and El-Rayah El-Tawfeeky during the fall of 2022.
