Recently, the demand for correcting facial asymmetry has been increasing, even when the extent of asymmetry is small. This case report describes nonsurgical orthodontic treatment for facial asymmetry in a 13-year-old female patient, facilitated by moving the deviant mandible to the nondeviated side after correcting for relevant dental compensation using microimplants. Mandibular repositioning was attempted using intermaxillary elastics between the microimplants placed into each jaw and guided by resin that was bonded on the maxillary first molar of the deviated side. To enhance mandibular movement, correction of the transverse occlusal cant and buccolingual inclination of the teeth were also performed. After 65 months of gradual treatment, facial symmetry, with favorable occlusion and jaw function, was achieved. These satisfactory results, including a well-balanced face and good occlusal interdigitation, were well maintained at the 53-month follow-up. Direct and functional forces applied against deviant functional forces can reduce facial asymmetry by differential growth or modeling of the condyle.

Silent Sinus Syndrome of the Frontal Sinus: A Case Report.

Cureus

December 2024

Otolaryngology, Fairfield General Hospital, Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, Manchester, GBR.

Silent sinus syndrome is a rare condition that typically affects the maxillary sinus, with only a few reported cases of frontal sinus involvement. Blockage of the sinus ostium leads to persistent hypoventilation, creating negative pressure and eventual sinus collapse. This report describes a previously undocumented case of facial asymmetry due to frontal silent sinus syndrome, following multiple childhood nasal injuries.

This study investigated the effects of unilateral temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJDs), specifically disc displacement without reduction and osteoarthritis on one side of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), on facial asymmetry in women, while the contralateral TMJ exhibits normal findings. Participants were retrospectively enrolled and divided into an affected group (n = 42 with unilateral TMJD) and a control group (n = 49 with bilateral healthy TMJs). The affected group was dagnosed with osteoarthritis on cone-bema computed tomograph and anterior disk displacement without reduction on magnetic resonance imaging.

Novel Plating System Designed Specifically for Chin Narrowing Surgery.

J Craniofac Surg

December 2024

Prive Esthetic and Facial Feminization Surgery, Woronicza, Suite, Warsaw.

Chin narrowing surgery also described as T-shape genioplasty is a procedure commonly performed in South Korean females, as well as, transgender females as it provides more triangle and feminine appearance of the lower face. It requires segmentation of the chin and that is more challenging than classic sliding genioplasty, which is commonly performed in the correction of retro or progenia. This article describes the utility of the new concept of a t-shape genioplasty plate that reduces the time of operation and minimizes typical complications of this procedure such as postoperative chin asymmetry or inadequate adhesion between bone segments.

Injection Techniques for Filler Procedures With Illustration: Narrative Review.

J Craniofac Surg

January 2025

Department of Oral Biology, Division in Anatomy and Developmental Biology, Human Identification Research Institute, BK21 FOUR Project, Yonsei University College of Dentistry.

This narrative review explores the various injection techniques utilized in facial filler procedures, emphasizing their applications, benefits, and potential complications. The increasing demand for total facial contouring and rejuvenation has led to a rise in the use of volumizing fillers and the integration of these procedures with other treatments such as toxins, threads, lasers, radiofrequency, and ultrasound. Achieving satisfactory results necessitates a comprehensive understanding of facial anatomy and the effects of aging on skin tissue.

The management of patients with facial asymmetry caused by condylar hyperplasia remains a subject of ongoing debate. This study compared active patients with unilateral condylar hyperplasia (UCH) who underwent proportional condylectomy with ceased patients with UCH who underwent orthognathic surgery, evaluating esthetics, function, and satisfaction. The retrospective study included 2 groups: group A, with 15 active patients with UCH who underwent proportional condylectomy, and group B, with 22 ceased patients with UCH who underwent orthognathic surgery.
