Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) has shown promise in biomedical sample characterization and high characterization sensitivity is in demand due to the thin-film (TF) feature of the sample. This paper proposes an optimized multilayer structure for sensitive characterization of TF aqueous solutions in reflection THz-TDS. Theoretical simulations are conducted for structural optimization and the 75 µm window-sample-mirror structure displays the best sensitivity compared to other sandwich structures and traditional THz measurement geometries. 0-20% TF glucose solutions are then measured; and a spectral peak introduced by the proposed structure is observed to result in the high sensitivity. Our work provides a new way of customizing multilayer structure for THz thin-film characterization.

Traditional machine learning methods face significant challenges in predicting the properties of highly symmetric molecules. In this study, we developed a machine learning model based on graph neural networks (GNNs) to accurately and swiftly predict the thermodynamic and photochemical properties of fullerenols, such as C(OH) ( = 1 to 30). First, we established a global method for generating fullerenol isomers through isomer fingerprinting, which can generate all possible isomers or produce diverse structural types on demand.

Multilayer thin films composed of dielectric BaCaZrTiO (BCZT) and oxygen-deficient BCZT (BCZT-OD) were fabricated on (001)-oriented NSTO substrates using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Unlike conventional approaches to energy storage capacitors, which primarily focus on compositional or structural modifications, this study explored the influence of the layer sequence and periodicity. The interface between the NSTO substrate and the BCZT-OD layer forms a Schottky barrier, resulting in electric field redistribution across the sublayers of the BCZT/BCZT-OD//(1P) thin film.

Graphene has unique properties paving the way for groundbreaking future applications. Its large optical nonlinearity and ease of integration in devices notably makes it an ideal candidate to become a key component for all-optical switching and frequency conversion applications. In the terahertz (THz) region, various approaches have been independently demonstrated to optimize the nonlinear effects in graphene, addressing a critical limitation arising from the atomically thin interaction length.

Multifunctional pH-responsive films were fabricated via layer-by-layer deposition of gelatin, chitosan, and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), incorporating selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) and beetroot extract (BTE), to monitor and preserve beef freshness. SeNPs were synthesized and characterized via various techniques. BTE exhibited promising functional properties, and films demonstrated a significant color transition from red to yellow across pH 2-14.

The in vitro blood-brain barrier (BBB) structures can offer advantages for studying cerebrovascular functions and developing neuroprotective drugs. However, currently developed BBB models are overly simplistic and inadequate for replicating the complex three-dimensional architecture of the in vivo BBB. In this study, a method is introduced for fabricating a three-layer vascular structure exhibiting BBB function using a coaxial extrusion bioprinting technique with a two-layer nozzle.
