We demonstrate a high efficiency, high linearity and high-speed silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator based on the DC Kerr effect enhanced by slow light. The two modulation arms based on 500-µm-long grating waveguides are embedded with PN and PIN junctions, respectively. A comprehensive comparison between the two modulation arms reveals that insertion loss, bandwidth and modulation linearity are improved significantly after employing the DC Kerr effect. The complementary advantages of the slow light and the DC Kerr effect enable a modulation efficiency of 0.85 V·cm, a linearity of 115 dB·Hz, and a bandwidth of 30 GHz when the group index of slow light is set to 10. Furthermore, 112 Gbit/s PAM4 transmission over 2 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) with bit error ratio (BER) below the soft decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold is also demonstrated.

The role of the hierarchical organization of the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) in its functioning, jet lag, and the light treatment of jet lag remains poorly understood. Using the core-shell model, we mimic collective behavior of the core and shell populations of the SCN oscillators in transient states after rapid traveling east and west. The existence of a special region of slow dynamical states of the SCN oscillators can explain phenomena such as the east-west asymmetry of jet lag, instances when entrainment to an advance is via delay shifts, and the dynamics of jet lag recovery time.

Introduction: Early pregnancy care involves the screening and identification of women with risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes, including stillbirth or preterm birth, to tailor pregnancy care and interventions accordingly. Most stillbirths and approximately two-thirds of preterm births, however, occur in the absence of evident risk factors. The majority of stillbirths occur in the preterm period, yet there are few interventions targeting this period, and progress to reduce stillbirth rates remains slow.

Light chain (AL) amyloidosis is the most common systemic amyloid disease characterized by abnormal accumulation of amyloid fibrils derived from immunoglobulin light chains (LCs). Both full-length (FL) LCs and their isolated variable (VL) and constant (CL) domains contribute to amyloid deposits in multiple organs, with the VL domain predominantly forming the fibril core. However, the role and interplay of these domains in amyloid aggregation and toxicity are poorly understood.

Slow sand filters (SSFs) have been increasingly applied to rainwater purification in recent years, but the response of SSFs to fluctuating rainfall, as well as the biofilm- and water-phase microecology in SSFs are still poorly understood. This study systematically evaluated the rainwater purification performance of SSFs and compared the bacterial community structure, assembly processes and molecular ecological interactions between the biofilm and water phases. The activated carbon and activated alumina filters exhibited the best performance for NH-N (18.

Type II/Schottky heterojunctions-triggered multi-channels charge transfer in Pd-TiO-CuO hybrid promotes photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Rapid charge recombination, limited light response, and slow surface reactions were observed in the photocatalysts, thereby limiting their future-oriented applications in photocatalytic hydrogen production through water splitting. Constructing a multi-channel charge separation photocatalysis system could solve those questions. In this study, Pd-TiO-CuO composites were successfully accomplished via a facile chemical reduction method.
