Surfaces that possess both superhydrophobicity and high transparency at the same time recently have attracted extensive attention in outdoor applications. However, fabrication and application of transparent superhydrophobic coating usually face following challenges: the micro-nano hierarchical structure required for superhydrophobicity usually leads to a decrease in the light transmittance due to its light trapping effect; fluorine-containing materials used in the preparation of superhydrophobic surfaces are potentially harmful to humans and the environment; and the superhydrophobic surface is easily destroyed by external factors. In this work, a transparent superhydrophobic coating was fabricated via an inexpensive and eco-friendly two-step method, that is, dipping glass substrate into the polydimethylsiloxane/SiO suspension followed by calcination treatment. The prepared coating showed superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 164° and a sliding angle less than 1.0°. In the visible light region with the wavelength range of 300-900 nm, the maximal transmittance of the superhydrophobic coating was ∼91.4%, which is higher than that of the untreated glass substrate (∼90.9%). Moreover, the coating can maintain superhydrophobicity and high transmittance after sandpaper abrasion, water flow impact, immersion in strong acid/alkaline solution, UV irradiation, and long-term outdoor exposure. We believing that the coating has huge potential value in outdoor applications.

The scarcity of freshwater resources and the treatment of dye wastewater have emerged as unavoidable challenges that need to be addressed. The combination of solar-driven interfacial evaporation, photocatalytic degradation, and superhydrophobic surface provides an effective approach for seawater desalination and the treatment of organic dyes. In this study, we fabricated a multifunctional synergistic solar evaporator by depositing cupric oxide nanoparticles onto polypyrrole (PPy) coating and subsequently modified it with a hydrophobic agent successfully.

Developing versatile, scalable, and durable coatings that repel various matters in different service environments is of great importance for engineered materials applications but remains highly challenging. Here, the mesoporous silica microspheres (HMS) fabricated by the hard template method were utilized as micro-nanocontainers to encapsulate the hydrophobic agent of perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (F13) and the corrosion inhibitor of benzotriazole (BTA), forming the functional microsphere of F-HMS(BTA). Moreover, the synthesized organosilane-modified silica sol adhesive (SMP) and F-HMS(BTA) were further employed as the binder and functional filler to construct a superhydrophobic self-healing coating of SMP@F-HMS(BTA) on various engineering metals through scalable spraying.

The term "aerophilic surface" is used to describe superhydrophobic surfaces in the Cassie-Baxter wetting state that can trap air underwater. To create aerophilic surfaces, it is essential to achieve a synergy between a low surface energy coating and substrate surface roughness. While a variety of techniques have been established to create surface roughness, the development of rapid, scalable, low-cost, waste-free, efficient, and substrate-geometry-independent processes for depositing low surface energy coatings remains a challenge.

Scaling of steel surfaces, prevalent in various industrial applications, results in significant operational inefficiencies and maintenance costs. Inspired by the natural hydrophobicity of springtail (Collembola) skin, which employs micro- and nanostructures to repel water, we investigate the application of silicone nanofilaments (SNFs) as a coating on steel surfaces to mitigate scaling. Silicone nanofilaments, previously successful on polymers, textiles, and glass, are explored for their hydrophobic properties and stability on steel.

Coal combustion generates soot-type air pollution, and NO, as a typical pollutant, is the main haze-causing pollutant. The degradation of NO by means of photocatalytic superhydrophobic multifunctional coatings is both durable and economical. The precipitation method was employed to create a p-n type BiOBr/α-FeO photocatalytic binary system.
