We present the case of a 74-year-old female patient with a 50 mm ascending aortic aneurysm who underwent ascending aorta replacement. During routine open heart surgery, suboptimal flow in the cardiopulmonary bypass circuit, led to the discovery of a type B aortic dissection with substantial flow in the false lumen. Conservative management was chosen, focusing on blood pressure control in the ICU.

Introduction And Significance: Zenker's diverticulum is a rare condition characterized by a false diverticulum, as a true diverticulum involves herniation of all wall layers outward. Breast-related herniation (BRH) is a vague term for many clinicians. The absence of a universal nomenclature and the different nature of the herniation process involved, being true or false, contribute to this vagueness. BRH includes a spectrum of disorders ranging from a few congenital breast disorders to commoner herniation processes related to acquired breast diseases.

Mapping genetic susceptibility to spontaneous preterm birth: analysis of Utah pedigrees to find inherited genetic factors.

Am J Obstet Gynecol

December 2024

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Utah Health, Salt Lake City, UT; Intermountain Healthcare, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Salt Lake City, UT.

Article Synopsis
  • Spontaneous preterm birth (SPTB) is a major cause of health issues in newborns and can arise from various unknown genetic factors, prompting the need for better understanding through family studies.
  • The research utilized the Utah Population Database to identify large families with multiple cases of early SPTB and focused on seven specific pedigrees for genetic analysis, excluding other known causes of preterm birth.
  • The study discovered two significant chromosomal regions related to SPTB, particularly in chromosome 8 (8q24.23), suggesting potential genetic markers for this condition.

Introduction And Aims: Arterial pseudoaneurysm is a rare yet potentially life-threatening complication that can arise as a late sequelae of penetrating injuries or orthopaedic procedures. We aim at sharing our institutional experience of managing 18 cases of lower limb arterial pseudoaneurysms in orthopaedic practice and to provide technical tips for emergency management of severe bleeding. A comprehensive literature review resulting from fractures and orthopaedic surgeries is also presented.
