Modified Technique for Difficult Secondary Tracheoesophageal Puncture.

Head Neck

January 2025

THANC (Thyroid, Head and Neck Cancer) Foundation, New York, New York, USA.

Tracheoesophageal puncture (TEP) with voice prosthesis (VP) placement is commonly used to restore voice in laryngectomy patients. The conventional procedure utilizes a rigid esophagoscope to open and visualize the pharyngeal inlet. However, this approach is challenging in patients with postradiation changes, reduced neck extension, or trismus.

Background: In the last decade, virtual reality has become a popular tool for rehabilitation. It is quite useful in spatial rehabilitation for Alzheimer's disease (AD) as it allows safe navigation in a virtual environment which looks realistic. However, a drawback of virtual reality is cybersickness.

GSE: A global-local storage enhanced video object recognition model.

Neural Netw

January 2025

National Key Laboratory of Human-Machine Hybrid Augmented Intelligence, Xi'an, 710054, China; Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Xi'an, 710054, China.

The presence of substantial similarities and redundant information within video data limits the performance of video object recognition models. To address this issue, a Global-Local Storage Enhanced video object recognition model (GSE) is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the model incorporates a two-stage dynamic multi-frame aggregation module to aggregate shallow frame features.

Objective: Acute unilateral peripheral vestibulopathy or vestibular neuritis (AUPV/VN) manifests as acute onset vertigo, often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and moderate gait instability. It is suspected when vestibular hypofunction is documented on video-head impulse (video-HITs) and caloric tests in the presence of contralesionally beating horizontal-torsional nystagmus. Herein, we report patients presenting with acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) showing selective otolithic dysfunction in the presence of normal caloric and video-HITs and abnormal enhancement of the peripheral vestibular structures on MRI.

Exploring Sex-Based Variations in Head Kinematics During Soccer Heading.

Ann Biomed Eng

January 2025

Department of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, University of Texas at San Antonio, San Antonio, TX, USA.

While studies indicate that females experience a higher concussion risk and more severe outcomes in soccer heading compared to males, comprehensive data on the underlying factors contributing to these sex-based differences are lacking. This study investigates the sex differences in the head-to-ball impact kinematics among college-aged soccer headers in a laboratory-controlled setting. Forty subjects (20 females, 20 males) performed ten headers, and impact kinematics, including peak angular acceleration and velocity (PAA, PAV) and peak linear acceleration (PLA), were measured using mouthguards.
