IL-18 and IL-18BP: A Unique Dyad in Health and Disease.

Int J Mol Sci

December 2024

Molecular Genetics, The Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot 7610001, Israel.

Interleukin-18 (IL-18) serves a dual function in the immune system, acting as a "double-edged sword" cytokine. Depending on the microenvironment and timing, IL-18 can either drive harmful inflammation or restore immune homeostasis. Pathologies characterized by elevated IL-18, recently proposed to be termed IL-18opathies, highlight the therapeutic potential for IL-18 blockade.

Biocompatible Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Display Antiviral Activity Against Two Different Respiratory Viruses in Mice.

Int J Nanomedicine

December 2024

Department of Immunology, Oncology and Nanobiomedicine Initiative, Centro Nacional de Biotecnología (CNB-CSIC), Madrid, Spain.

Background: Severe Acute Respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and Influenza A viruses (IAVs) are among the most important causes of viral respiratory tract infections, causing similar symptoms. IAV and SARS-CoV-2 infections can provoke mild symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, loss of taste or smell, or they may cause more severe consequences leading to pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome or even death. While treatments for IAV and SARS-CoV-2 infection are available, IAV antivirals often target viral proteins facilitating the emergence of drug-resistant viral variants.

CuBe: a geminivirus-based copper-regulated expression system suitable for post-harvest activation.

Plant Biotechnol J

January 2025

Instituto de Biología Molecular y Celular de Plantas, CSIC-UPV, Valencia, Spain.

The growing demand for sustainable platforms for biomolecule manufacturing has fuelled the development of plant-based production systems. Agroinfiltration, the current industry standard, offers several advantages but faces limitations for large-scale production due to high operational costs and batch-to-batch variability. Alternatively, here, we describe the CuBe system, a novel bean yellow dwarf virus (BeYDV)-derived conditional replicative expression platform stably transformed in Nicotiana benthamiana and activated by copper sulphate (CuSO), an inexpensive and widely used agricultural input.

Loneliness and social isolation affect more than 1 in 4 community-dwelling older adults in the United States, who may also require long-term care support. Despite being seen as a solution to the long-term care crisis, most older adults prefer to age in place rather than using skilled nursing facilities. However, in-home care is unsustainable due to a shortage of direct care workers and may exacerbate social isolation by confining older adults to their homes.
