Influenza Other Respir Viruses

GSK, Upper Providence, Pennsylvania, USA.
Background: Despite vaccination programs and available treatments, seasonal influenza carries a large mortality burden, especially in intensive care unit (ICU) settings. Understanding the influenza mortality burden in ICU settings can inform treatment planning and resource allocation. Nonetheless, surveillance data on mortality in ICU-admitted patients are scarce and estimates vary greatly.

Current coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines have prevented millions of deaths since the beginning of the pandemic. Yet, current vaccines have critical limitations: (1) they elicit poor mucosal immune responses with reduced protection against infection and viral transmission, (2) immune responses wane quickly, and (3) new immune evasive severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 variants continue to emerge. Next-generation vaccines aim to induce improved mucosal immunity via mucosal administration, and to elicit a greater duration and breadth of immune responses through new platforms like self-amplifying RNA.

Background: Timely administration of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) birth dose vaccine, along with identifying high-risk pregnant individuals for antiviral prophylaxis, is essential for the global elimination of vertical transmission of HBV. However, in resource-limited settings, access to HBV DNA testing is scarce, and accurate rapid tests for HBeAg are lacking. We aimed to assess the diagnostic performance of a newly developed hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) rapid diagnostic test (RDT) to identify women who are HBsAg-positive and eligible for antiviral prophylaxis.

Department of AIDS and STD Prevention and Control, Zhejiang Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 3399 Binsheng Road, Binjiang District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, 310051, P. R. China.
Background: In China, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) poses a significant challenge to older heterosexual adults. This study explored the transmission dynamics of HIV infection among older adults in northern Zhejiang Province, China using phylogenetic analysis and transmission networks.
Methods: HIV pol sequences without any antiretroviral therapy were obtained from newly diagnosed HIV-positive patients in Huzhou between 2017 and 2022.

Misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines has hampered their uptake worldwide. In Ghana, a belief that COVID-19 vaccines affect fertility is prevalent and difficult to counter. UNICEF Ghana co-produced a context-driven, behavioral science-based audio drama ('A shot of love') that aimed to debunk this misinformation narrative.
