The germination process is of central importance across the cultivated species involving several key enzymes for mobilization of stored food reserves. Pullulanase (PUL), a starch-debranching enzyme, plays an important role in mobilizing stored endosperm food reserves during germination. Pullulanase inhibitor (PULI) hinders PUL's activity through an unknown mechanism. Barley has one and two genes. During the time-dependent processes of seed germination, only expression shows an antagonistic relationship with that of . Our data have indicated that the expression of is modulated by SPL (Squamosa-promoter-binding Protein Like) transcription factors, known to be targeted by miR156. We show that the binding of recombinant HvSPL3 protein to the promoter occurs under reducing, but not under oxidizing conditions. Replacement of Cys residues with threonine in HvSPL3 abolishes the binding, indicating an essential role of the redox state in the expression of . Our findings may have important implications for the industrial use of starch.

Peccaries (collared peccary-CP-and white-lipped peccary-WLP) are an essential source of protein and income for rural communities in the Amazon region. Since 1980s, researchers in the Amazon have reported recurrent local disappearances of WLP populations. Although such disappearances impact the species conservation and the food security of rural societies, no studies have drawn consistent conclusions about the causes of these population collapses.

Proteome changes during the germination and early seedling development of carnauba palm (Copernicia prunifera) under skotomorphogenic conditions.

We analyze the proteome changes during the development of the carnauba palm (Copernicia prunifera) seedlings under skotomorphogenic conditions, by separating the embryo into its two components: haustorium (HA) and cotyledonary petiole (CP) and established the descriptive and quantitative proteomes of these tissues across four developmental stages. 5205 proteins were identified in HA and 6028 in CP. These proteomes are rich in proteins known to maintain the skotomorphogenic state, and in a complete set of proteins involved in cellular respiration and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites.

Ca and Mg are essential micronutrients for plant growth, and they play a crucial role in plant development and responses to adversity by influencing the activities of endogenous hormones and antioxidant enzymes. However, the specific mechanisms through which calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) regulate the kernel sugar content through endogenous hormones and antioxidant enzymes remain unclear. In this study, we analyzed the impact of Ca and Mg on the physiology of maize leaves and kernel quality by determining the activities of antioxidant enzymes and endogenous hormones, and the kernel sugar content in maize leaves when supplemented with different levels of Ca and Mg.

Facultative scavenging can be observed across a large range of carnivorous mammals but is an uncommon behavioural trait in cheetahs (). Very few incidents of cheetahs scavenging have been reported, with no explanation given as to why it may occur. In this paper, we provide three more observations of cheetahs scavenging between 2019 and 2023 in three different protected areas in South Africa and Malawi.
