Autoimmune encephalitis refers to a group of disorders characterised by a non-infectious encephalitis, often with prominent seizures and surface neuronal autoantibodies. AE is an important cause of new-onset refractory status epilepticus in humans and is frequently responsive to immunotherapies including corticosteroids, plasma exchange, intravenous immunoglobulin G and rituximab. Recent research suggests that parallel autoantibodies can be detected in non-human mammalian species. The best documented example is leucine-rich glioma-inactivated 1 (LGI1)-antibodies in domestic cats with limbic encephalitis (LE). In this review, we discuss the role of neuroinflammation and autoantibodies in human and feline epilepsy and LE.

Background: Neuropathic pain resulting from spinal cord injury (SCI) is associated with persistent hyperactivity of primary nociceptors. Anandamide (AEA) has been reported to modulate neuronal excitability and synaptic transmission through activation of cannabinoid type-1 receptors (CB1Rs) and transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1). Background: In Alzheimer's disease (AD), cortical tau aggregation is a strong predictor of cortical brain atrophy as shown by MRI and PET studies, particularly driving the degeneration of neuronal somata in the grey matter. However, tau's physiological role is to stabilize microtubules within axons in the brain's white matter (WM) pathways. Therefore, tau's white-to-grey-matter translocation and aggregation in neurofibrillary tangles close to neuronal somata may induce WM degeneration through destabilization of axonal microtubule integrity.
