Recently, a large family of at least 14 discotic liquid crystals was discovered that are exceptions to the conventional paradigm that discotic mesogens tend to feature long, flexible tails on their periphery. To understand why these materials are liquid crystals, as well as the structural determinants of discotic phase behavior, we studied a group of closely related small tail-free disk-like molecules, including both mesogenic and non-mesogenic compounds differing only in the position of a single fluorine substituent. The rigidity and structural simplicity of these molecules make them well suited to for study by large, fully all-atom simulations. Using a combination of static and dynamic metrics, we were able to identify several key features of the columnar mesophase and, thereby, conclusively identify a columnar liquid crystalline mesophase present in a subset of our systems. Our simulations feature molecules hopping between columns in the columnar mesophase and distinctive molecular rotations in 60° steps about the columnar axis. The ability to create and characterize columnar mesophases in silico provides a potent tool for untangling the structural determinants of liquid crystalline behavior in these and other tail-free discotic liquid crystals.

In liquid crystal (LC) cells, the surface patterning directs the self-assembly of the uniaxial building blocks in the bulk, enabling the design of stimuli-response optical devices with various functionalities. The combination of different anchoring patterns at both substrates can lead to surface induced frustration, preventing a purely planar and defect-free configuration. In cells with crossed assembly of rotating anchoring patterns, elastic deformations allow to obtain a defect-free bulk configuration, but an electrical stimulus can induce disclination lines.

The coffee-ring effect, caused by uneven deposition of colloidal particles in perovskite precursor solutions, leads to poor uniformity in perovskite films prepared through large-area printing. In this work, the surface of SnO is roughened to construct a Wenzel model, successfully achieving a super-hydrophilic interface. This modification significantly accelerates the spreading of the perovskite precursor solution, reducing the response delay time of perovskite colloidal particles during the printing process.

This research investigated the effect modified solvent-shifting method on the formation, ordered structure, and morphology of V-type starch. Ionic liquid (IL) dissolution and hot ethanol aqueous incubation in gradient concentrations from 30 % to 80 % (v/v) were applied to optimize the relative crystallinity of V-type starch. The results showed that this new method worked in producing V-type conformation, and higher ethanol concentration tended to yield V-type starch with higher crystallinity and more disk-like shape structure within the ethanol range of 30-50 % (v/v).

Non-close-packed crystalline arrays of colloidal particles in an elastic matrix exhibit mechanochromism. However, small interparticle distances often limit the range of reversible color shifts and reduce reflectivity during a blueshift. A straightforward, reproducible strategy using matrix swelling to increase interparticle distance and improve mechanochromic performance is presented.
