Information storage at the molecular level commonly entails encoding in the form of ordered sequences of different monomers and subsequent fragmentation and tandem mass spectrometry analysis to read this information. Recent approaches also include the use of mixtures of distinct molecules noncovalently bonded to one another. Here, we present an alternate isotope ratio encoding approach utilizing deuterium-labeled monomers to produce hundreds of oligomers endowed with unique isotope distribution patterns. Mass spectrometric recognition of these patterns then allowed us to directly readout encoded information with high fidelity. Specifically, we show that all 256 tetramers composed of four different monomers of identical constitution can be distinguished by their mass fingerprint using mono-, di-, tri-, and tetradeuterated building blocks. The method is robust to experimental errors and does not require the most sophisticated mass spectrometry instrumentation. Such isotope ratio-encoded oligomers may serve as tags that carry information, but the method mainly opens up the capability to write information, for example, about molecular identity, directly into a pure compound via its isotopologue distribution obviating the need for additional tagging and avoiding the use of mixtures of different molecules.

The nun moth, L. (Linnaeus, 1758), is one of the most important defoliators of coniferous forests in Europe and Asia. In sexual communication, females produce three epoxides and an alkene: (-)-disparlure [(7,8)--7,8-epoxy-2-methyloctadecane], (+)-monachalure [(7,8)--7,8-epoxyoctadecane], (-)-monachalure [(7,8)--7,8-epoxyoctadecane], and their corresponding olefins.

: Radon is a known risk factor for lung cancer, and residential radon exposure is the leading cause of lung cancer in never smokers; however, in Italy, there is still a lack of public awareness regarding the risk caused by residential radon exposure. In this mortality study, which was carried out in an Italian Apulian town (Locorotondo) of the Bari province, we aimed to analyze lung cancer mortality and all-cause mortality in a population highly exposed to radon. : The study period was 1998-2021.

In the present work, we performed calculations of the kinetic isotope effect (KIE) on H/D, N/N, O/O, and C/C isotopic substitution in the dissociation of beta-sheet polyglycine dimers of different lengths into two monomer chains. This dissociation reaction, proceeding via breaking of the interchain hydrogen bonds (H-bonds), is considered to be a model of unfolding of the secondary structure of proteins. The calculated strengthening of the interchain hydrogen bonds N-H⋯O=C due to heavy isotope substitution decreases in the row H/D >> N/N > O/O > C/C.

The detection of endogenous anabolic androgenic steroids (EAAS) is performed with the Steroidal Module of the Athlete Biological Passport (ABP). Glucocorticoids (GC) could be a confounding factor to the ABP Steroidal Module because they inhibit the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and ABP metabolites have partial adrenal origin. In previous studies, single-dose systemic GC administrations have been shown to reduce the urinary ratios A/T and 5αdiol/E.

Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry (IRMS) is a promising tool in organic authentication cases. Premium-priced Italian rice varieties (Carnaroli, Arborio, Baldo) are used in cuisines worldwide for their unique qualitative properties. Organic authentication of rice by morphological assessment is unfeasible, while its market availability at different refining stages (brown, white) further increases the data variability.
