Swelling of erythrocytes in hypotonic media was considered. Taking into account the presence of surface rigidity in erythrocyte membranes an equation is proposed which describes a relationship between erythrocyte sizes and osmolarity of the suspension medium. Calculations carried out on the basis of this equation show that in the experiments when osmotic resistance of erythrocytes is estimated the mechanical properties of erythrocyte membranes are largely manifested. In many cases at their expense there seems to proceed the change of this index.

Background: The recently identified swine inflammation and necrosis syndrome (SINS) affects tail, ears, teats, coronary bands, claws and heels of affected individuals. The primarily endogenous syndrome is based on vasculitis, thrombosis, and intimal proliferation, involving defence cells, interleukins, chemokines, and acute phase proteins and accompanied by alterations in clinical chemistry, metabolome, and liver transcriptome. Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hereditary hemolytic anemia associated with the alteration of the membrane composition of the sickle erythrocytes, the loss of glycolysis, dysregulation of the pyruvate phosphatase pathway, and changes in nucleotide metabolism of the sickle red blood cell (RBC). This review provides a comprehensive overview of the impact of the presence of Hb S, which leads to the disruption of the normal RBC metabolism. The intricate interplay between the redox and energetic balance in erythrocytic cells, where the glycolysis, pentose phosphate pathway, and methemoglobin reductase pathways are all altered in sickle RBC, is a key focus.
