Determining the structures of new natural products from marine species not only enriches our understanding of the diverse chemistry of these species, but can also lead to the discovery of compounds with novel and/or important biological activities. Herein, we describe the isolation of isomaneonene C (), a new halogenated C acetogenin, and three known compounds, -snyderol (), -maneonene D (), and isomaneonene B (), from the organic extract obtained from the red alga cf. collected from Iheya Island, Okinawa, Japan. The structures of these secondary metabolites were elucidated spectroscopically. All compounds were inactive at 30 μg/disc against methicillin-resistant (MRSA) in combination treatment with a βlactam drug, meropenem.

Anthropogenic pressures affect large stretches of Mediterranean coastal environments, determining alterations, including chemical pollution, able to impair ecosystem functioning and services. Among the pollutants of major concern for their toxicity and persistence, there are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can be effectively monitored through bioaccumulation approaches. However, the main biomonitor of PAHs in the Mediterranean Sea, Posidonia oceanica, is currently undergoing extensive regressions due to anthropogenic pressures, forcing the search for alternative biomonitors.

Alga-dominated geothermal spring communities in Yellowstone National Park (YNP), USA, have been the focus of many studies, however, relatively little is known about the composition and community interactions which underpin these ecosystems. Inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) is a linear polymer of phosphate that plays various roles in cells, including in phosphate and metal homeostasis. Homologs of the vacuolar transporter chaperone 4 (VTC4), catalyzing polyP synthesis in many eukaryotes, are absent in red algae, which are among the earliest divergent plant lineages. We identified homologs of polyphosphate kinase 1 (PPK1), a conserved polyP synthase in bacteria, in 42 eukaryotic genomes, including 31 species detected in this study and 12 species of red algae.
