Super digits are a rare hand malformation, first described by Virchel Wood. Surgical intervention to try to make two fingers out of a super digit has been discouraged. Here, we present a variant of a super digit type IC2 and propose a revision of the characteristics in each super digit subtype. In our view, this adjustment in Wood's original description could facilitate the identification of super digits, which are a contraindication to syndactyly release.

Patterns of digital health access and use among US adults: A latent class analysis.

BMC Digit Health

July 2024

Division of Intramural Research, National Institute on Minority Health & Health Disparities, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, United States.

Background: Digital technologies allow users to engage in health-related behaviors associated with positive outcomes. We aimed to identify classes of US adults with distinct digital technologies access and health use patterns and characterize class composition. Data came from Health Information National Trends Survey Wave 5 Cycles 1-4, a nationally representative cross-sectional survey of US adults (=13,993).

Background: The tauopathy inhibitor, davunetide shows sex-dependent efficacy in women suffering from progressive supranuclear palsy. Extending these findings to prodromal Alzheimer's disease, we submitted a double-blind, placebo-controlled, 12 weeks/16 weeks follow-up, davunetide clinical trial results in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (ClinicalTrials.gov ID NCT00422981), to a sex-dependent analysis.

In Situ Imaging of Proteins Using DNA-PAINT Super-Resolution Microscopy.

Methods Mol Biol

May 2024

Faculty of Physics and Center for NanoScience, Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Germany.

The spatial resolution of conventional light microscopy is restricted by the diffraction limit to hundreds of nanometers. Super-resolution microscopy enables single digit nanometer resolution by circumventing the diffraction limit of conventional light microscopy. DNA point accumulation for imaging in nanoscale topography (DNA-PAINT) belongs to the family of single-molecule localization super-resolution approaches.

Site-specific protein labeling strategies for super-resolution microscopy.

Rudolf Virchow Center, Research Center for Integrative and Translational Bioimaging, University of Würzburg, 97080 Würzburg, Germany; Interdisciplinary Institute for Neuroscience, University of Bordeaux, CNRS, UMR 5297, 33076 Bordeaux, France. Electronic address:

Super-resolution microscopy (SRM) has transformed our understanding of proteins' subcellular organization and revealed cellular details down to nanometers, far beyond conventional microscopy. While localization precision is independent of the number of fluorophores attached to a biomolecule, labeling density is a decisive factor for resolving complex biological structures. The average distance between adjacent fluorophores should be less than half the desired spatial resolution for optimal clarity.

Article Synopsis
  • AI models that excel in clinical settings may not perform well in different locations due to variability in data and practices.
  • The article discusses two main sources of this performance issue: those that researchers can control and those that arise naturally from the way clinical data is generated.
  • It specifically explores how unique clinical practices at different sites can alter data distribution and suggests a method to distinguish these influences from the actual disease patterns that AI models aim to analyze.
