This study assessed, for the first time ever, the use of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag as alkalinizing material during the sludge conditioning, as an environmentally-friendly alternative to CaO and other conventional alkalis. Its effects on the dewatering, solubilisation and stabilization of sewage sludge were studied, testing increasing dosages of BOF from 0 to 6 gBOF/gTSS at room temperature and under constant mechanical agitation was evaluated. Results revealed that the addition of BOF slag to sewage sludge produced similar degrees of solubilisation to those obtained using lime, reaching a maximum of 34% of total COD for 3.00 gBOF/gTSS. The use of BOF slag also involved a low solubilisation of either nitrogen, carbon or phosphorous, a negligible mobilization of heavy metals and a positive effect on its biological hygienisation. A Class A biosolid for doses of 4.50gBOF/gTSS or higher was achieved, which can be applied directly to the soil for agricultural purposes in accordance with current legislation.

The modern metallurgical industry produces approximately 90% of the volume of all produced steel; for this, integrated technology based on fossil materials such as coal, fluxes, and especially iron ore is used. This industry generates large amounts of waste and by-products at almost all stages of production. Alternative iron and steel production technologies based on iron ore, methane, or pure hydrogen are also not waste-free.

The scarcity of conventional aggregates with tremendous growth in highway construction and the indiscriminate dumping of industrial waste materials in precious landfills has become a huge global concern. This study is aimed at utilizing wastes from various industries, including coalmine overburden (OB) dump, basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag, and fly ash to produce suitable and sustainable cement-treated subbase/base course layers (CBSB/CTB) for flexible pavement construction. Response surface methodology was used to optimize the composition of the blended material considering unconfined compressive strength (UCS) and Poisson's ratio.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how adding varying amounts of basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag affects the mechanical properties of warm-mixed rubber asphalt (WMRA) and hot-mixed rubber asphalt (HMRA).
  • Different proportions of BOF slag were tested (0%, 25%, 50%, and 75%), alongside a warm-mixed modifier (Sasobit) to evaluate performance through static and dynamic mechanical tests.
  • Results showed that BOF slag improves asphalt resistance to deformation and cracking, particularly when combined with Sasobit, indicating its potential to enhance rubber asphalt mixtures' durability and expand the use of industrial waste materials.

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, Cracow University of Technology, Al. Jana Pawla II 37, 31-864 Kraków, Poland.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study analyzes the use of steel sludge and slag as substitutes for natural sand in cement mortars, addressing environmental concerns related to metallurgical waste from steel production and the potential leaching of harmful metal ions.
  • - A Full Quadratic Response Surface Model (RSM) was used to assess the optimal replacement levels of sand with 0-20% of each waste type, revealing that while there are slight reductions in consistency and mechanical strength, mortars still show enhanced frost resistance and minimal environmental impact.
  • - Incorporating a 40% mixture of sludge and slag allows significant sand conservation in mortar production, resulting in cost savings and promoting more sustainable construction practices, which is beneficial for a circular economy.

Article Synopsis
  • Municipal solid waste landfills are a major source of methane emissions, contributing to global warming, and current management methods are not fully effective in preventing these emissions.* -
  • An innovative biogeochemical cover (BGCC) combines a biochar-based layer for oxidizing methane with a BOF steel slag layer to reduce carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide emissions.* -
  • Field performance of the BGCC has not been studied, so a large-scale tank setup tested its effectiveness, revealing that methane removal efficiency varied based on gas influx rates, reaching up to 79.7% under moderate conditions.*
