The Imaging Science Subsystem onboard the Cassini spacecraft recorded numerous high-quality images of Jupiter and Saturn at various wavelengths, from ultraviolet to near-infrared, during its 20-year mission from 1997 to 2017. Using these images, we have developed global maps of Jupiter and Saturn across multiple wavelengths. These maps reveal the global atmospheric structures of Jupiter and Saturn, offering a comprehensive tool to study the physical and dynamic processes of these atmospheric systems on a global scale.

A database for the outer sizes of tropical cyclones over the Middle Americas.

Data Brief

December 2024

Instituto de Ciencias de la Atmósfera y Cambio Climático, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Ciudad de México 04510, Mexico.

Tropical cyclones (TCs) are catastrophic phenomena that constantly threaten populations settled in the tropics. Their direct effects (strong winds, storm surges, and intense precipitation) are confined near the TC center. On the other hand, the indirect effects are due to extreme rainfall events associated with rainbands distant from the TC center.

Modeling the interaction between wildfires and windthrows: A pilot case study for Italian Alps.

J Environ Manage

December 2024

Department of Land, Environment, Agriculture and Forestry, University of Padova, Legnaro (PD), Italy.

Wildland fires and windthrows represent relevant disturbances for forest ecosystems worldwide. In this context, especially for Italian catchments, the interaction between windthrows and changes in wildfire behaviour starting from ALS data processing is scarcely investigated. Therefore, this research aims to compute a multi-temporal analysis of the interaction between windthrows and wildfire behaviour in a forested area (Veneto region, northern Italy), recently affected by the renamed Vaia windstorm.

Blue corona discharges are often generated in thunderclouds penetrating into the stratosphere and are the optical manifestation of narrow bipolar events (NBEs) observed in radio signals. While their production appears to depend on convection, the cause and nature of such discharges are not well known. Here we show the observations by a lightning detection array of unusual amounts of 982 NBEs during a tropical storm on the coastline of China.
