Major depressive disorder is a serious and prevalent neuropsychiatric disorder, affecting more than 350 million people worldwide. Here, sodium selenite (SS) was selected as the selenite supplement to improve the behavior in a mouse model of depression induced by As. SS may be not the optimal speciation for selenite supplementation and the source of the SS used in the study was not disclosed. There are many mouse models of depression and anxiety; however, in the current study, a classical mouse model of depression was not used. Thus, several questions still need to be further discussed. Taken together, the results indicate that SS may be not the optimal speciation as an effective therapy for As-induced anxiety-/depression-like behavior.

This study presents the development and validation of a precise analytical method for the speciation analysis of arsenic (As) compounds, including inorganic species [As(III) and As(V)] and organic species such as monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA). The method employs anion-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (AE HPLC) coupled with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). To optimize the sample preparation process, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and heat-assisted extraction (HAE) techniques were evaluated and compared.

The occurrence of geogenic arsenic (As) in groundwater is a global public health concern. However, there remain large gaps in groundwater As data, making it difficult to identify non-compliant domestic wells, partly due to lack of low-cost methods capable of rapid As analysis. Therefore, the development of high through-put and reliable on-site determination methods for inorganic As is essential.

Co-pyrolysis is an efficient approach for municipal sewage sludge (SS) treatment, facilitating the production of biochar and promoting the stabilization and removal of heavy metals, particularly when combined with chlorinated materials. This study explores the impact of pyrolysis temperatures (400 °C and 600 °C) and chlorinated additives (polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as an organic chloride source and ferric chloride (FeCl) as an inorganic chloride source) at 10% and 20% concentrations, on the yield, chemical speciation, leachability, and ecological risks of arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), and zinc (Zn) in biochar derived from SS. The results revealed that increasing the pyrolysis temperature from 400 to 600 °C significantly reduced biochar yield due to enhanced volatilization of organic components, as well as the removal of heavy metals in interaction with chlorinated materials.

An analytical quality by design-guided LC-ICP-MS method for simultaneous arsenic speciation analysis in HEK-293 cells was optimized and validated. Initially, critical method variables (CMVs) were identified to achieve the targeted critical quality attribute (CQA) of the analytical target profile (ATP). Based on knowledge and risk assessments, formic acid (X), citric acid (X), and pH (X) were studied for their effect on method responses such as resolutions (Y1, Y2) and retention time of As(V), As(III) and DMA (Y3, Y4, and Y5) using central composite design (CCD).

Automated, rapid electrocatalyst discovery techniques that comprehensively address the exploration of chemical spaces, characterization of catalyst robustness, reproducibility, and translation of results to (flow) electrolysis operation are needed. Responding to the growing interest in biomass valorization, we studied the glycerol electro-oxidation reaction (GEOR) on gold in alkaline media as a model reaction to demonstrate the efficacy of such methodology introduced here. Our platform combines individually addressable electrode arrays with HardPotato, a Python application programming interface for potentiostat control, to automate electrochemical experiments and data analysis operations.
