Although race is socially constructed, racism and racialization are social determinants of health. Over four centuries of colonial genocide and structural violence against Indigenous and Black peoples in Canada have resulted in intergeneration traumas and health disparities among Indigenous and Black people, sustained by ongoing social, political, and economic inequities. Evidence indicates the impact of contemporary and historical forms of racism on health outcomes.

Increasing use of co-design concepts and buzzwords create risk of generating 'co-design branded' healthcare research and healthcare system design involving insincere, contrived, coercive engagement with First Nations Peoples. There are concerns that inauthenticity in co-design will further perpetuate and ingrain harms inbuilt to colonial systems.Co-design is a tool that inherently must truly reposition power to First Nations Peoples, engendering both respect and ownership.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFData quality for and about American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) people is undermined by deeply entrenched, colonial practices that have become standard in US federal data systems. This article draws on cases of maternal mortality and COVID-19 to demonstrate the ethical and clinical need for inclusive, diverse, and accurate data when researching AI/AN health trends. This article further argues that epidemiologists specifically must challenge implicit bias, question methods and practices, and recognize colonial, racist reporting practices about AI/AN people that have long undermined data collection, analytical, and dissemination practices that are fundamental to epidemiological research.

Background: The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada called upon health professional programs to teach about historical and on-going colonalism. Since these calls to action, there has been an increase in educational opportunities on the topic. Although it is generally assumed that learning about colonialism will reduce racism and improve allyship towards Indigenous Peoples, an evaluation of this assumption is needed.
